The Crown Sweepstakes Winner Is...

Congratulations to Jay Carini, a fellow fan of TheSabre.com who won a two-year lease on his choice of an Acura TL or BMW Z4 from Crown Automotive. Jay selected the Acura TL, so he'll be riding in style for the next 24 months, courtesy of Crown.

In case you didn't participate or weren't aware, the sweepstakes ran all fall, and it was between TheSabre.com and TechSideline.com. Visitors to both web sites could answer weekly trivia questions and register to win weekly prizes and the grand prize: their choice of the Acura TL or the BMW Z4.

Only one winner was selected from among the entries received on the two web sites, and Jay was it. Crown was very pleased with the results of the sweepstakes and the attention it received, so thanks to everyone who participated. We thank Crown for their continuing sponsorship of TheSabre.com, and if you are in the market for a new car, show your support of the Sabre community and provide Crown first shot at winning your business. Just click the link above, or find their spot on our Sponsors Page, and give them a call.

   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Virginia has not received a verbal commitment since late October, and fans are getting a little restless. With the Signing Day (Wednesday, Feb. 4th) drawing closer, many top prospects will begin to make decisions, and Coach Groh and company should land their share. UVA fans can expect decisions from in-state prospects Ahmad Bradshaw and Andrew Bowman likely within the next few weeks. Bradshaw may be favoring UVA while Bowman is not tipping his hand among Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Tennessee. It appears Ahmad will not be making any more official visits. Bowman was scheduled to visit UNC this weekend but decided to cancel and start thinking about his decision.

Last weekend's Army Bowl featured several top UVA targets including wide receivers Doug Dutch and Dwayne Jarrett. The 'Hoos are in the top two and looking good for Jarrett, however appear to be trailing for Dutch at the moment. Doug visits Florida this weekend and hopes to decide within the next few weeks. Jarrett could decide any time between UVA and USC.he has made official visits to both.

This weekend, there will be no official visitors for the 2004 class, but there will be juniors on hand for a football junior day on Sunday. The football players will be on hand for the Duke at Virginia basketball contest.

   News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

Matt Schaub to play in Senior Bowl

UVa quarterback Matt Schaub has been chosen to play in the 2004 Senior Bowl in Mobile Alabama on January 24th. Sources indicate that Schaub will start for the South team, which also features quarterbacks Philip Rivers (N.C. State) and J.P. Losman (Tulane). The North team features three of the nation's top quarterbacks in Jon Navarre (Michigan), Cody Pickett (Washington) and Josh Harris (Bowling Green). Full rosters should be released on or just prior to January 18th.

Schaub broke just about every quarterback record at UVa, including touchdown passes for a career. His touchdown strike to sophomore tight end Heath Miller in the 2003 Continental Tire Bowl broke Shawn Moore's record of 55. Schaub also holds records for passing yardage in a career, pass completions in a career, pass attempts in a career, as well as 300 and 200-yard passing games in a career.

Yet another award for linebacker Ahmad Brooks

The Football Writers Association of America has announced that UVa linebacker Ahmad Brooks has been named to the Scripps/FWAA Freshman All-American Team. This is yet another honor for Brooks, who was also named to freshman All-American teams by The Sporting News, Rivals.com and CollegeSportsReport.com.

Brooks set the freshman record for tackles at UVa with 117 for the 2003 season. He also racked up 10 tackles for loss, 4 sacks and 13 quarterback hurries (unofficially). Brooks started every game this season for the Cavaliers. Brooks joined the Cavalier team for the spring semester in 2003 after spending one semester at Hargrave Military Academy. During the spring game in April 2003, Brooks provided highlights for the Cavalier faithful as a preview of things to come. He made several plays in that game that signaled to fans that Brooks was indeed worth the hype that surrounded him as a high school player.

Brooks was Virginia's highest-rated recruit coming out of high school two years ago and led a class that may turn out to be the best-ever in the history of the Cavalier program. Brooks was rated as one of the top linebackers in the country by just about every recruiting service that year. He was named National Defensive Player of the year by several sources, including USA Today and Tom Lemming. He also earned Parade and PrepStar All-American honors.

UVa Hoops finishes up non-conference schedule

The Virginia men's basketball team split its last two non-conference games this past week, losing to Providence (84-69) and then surviving a tough battle with William & Mary (84-71). The Cavaliers finish up their non-conference schedule at 10-1 on the season, with their overall record 10-2 (the other loss coming to conference foe N.C. State). The Hoos are now set to host ACC power Duke this Sunday.
