Wahoo fans,

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving holiday last week. Did you get your fill of turkey? I know I did, and our football and basketball teams did as well. It's certainly been an exciting week for UVa football and basketball. The basketball team won three straight this past week (including a win over the Hokies), and they now sit at 4-0, with another game tonight. The football team did a number on the Hokies last Saturday and secured a bid to the 2003 Continental Tire Bowl to play Pittsburgh. Scroll down to get more info on the bowl, as well as info on the upcoming basketball contest.

As always, we hope you take it slow and be safe this holiday season. Here's to you and yours!

Go Hoos and Happy Holidays!

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Virginia put on a show last weekend, impressing a number of top recruits during their victory over Virginia Tech. Granted the victory itself will not sway recruits one way or the other, however the impressive atmosphere and intensity throughout the weekend will have an effect.

Gonzaga (DC) WR Doug Dutch, Roanoke (NC) athlete Trimaine Goddard, Millville (NJ) defensive end Dwayne Hendricks, Tri-Cities (GA) athlete Tristan Davis, and more were on hand on official visits last week. The Cavaliers put forth their best effort. Dutch stated that UVa was his current leader over the rest of his schools, however he does have four official visits remaining including Miami this weekend. He is one of the top offensive targets in this year's class.

Also on hand were a number of unofficial visitors, including Jerod Mayo of Kecoughtan. The talented linebacker enjoyed his time on an unofficial visit. He begins his run of official visits this weekend, with a trip to NC State.

Today came the news that West Charlotte (NC) cornerback Rod Council is down to two schools - UVA and Virginia Tech. Notre Dame is still under consideration, however the Irish are behind the first two. Rod, one of the best cornerbacks in the East, will make an official to VT this weekend before deciding. He may announce during the NC/SC Shrine Bowl this weekend.

This weekend is relatively quiet with no official or unofficial visitors on campus. Next weekend will be another big one, with Jerod Mayo, WR Dwayne Jarrett, and others scheduled to visit. Look for updates every Sunday on these and other prospects returning from visits.

    UVa football defeats Virginia Tech

The Cavalier football team defeated the Hokies 34-21 last Saturday to win back the Commonwealth Cup. UVa hadn't held the Cup since defeating Virginia Tech back in 1998. Quarterback Matt Schaub and tight end Heath Miller led the way for the Cavs on offense. Schaub completed 32 of 46 passes for 358 yards and two touchdowns, while Miller put in a career day snagging 13 of Schaub's passes for 145 yards. Miller shattered the ACC tight end receiving record in the process.

Defensively, the Cavaliers were led by Jamaine Winborne and Almondo 'Muffin' Curry. Winborne received a game ball for his efforts, racking up nine tackles, breaking up one pass and making one tackle for loss. Curry picked off a late-game interception and ran it back 58 yards, securing the win.

Freshman linebacker Ahmad Brooks also put in an excellent effort, racking up nine tackles on the day. Five Virginia defensive players had eight or more tackles, including Darryl Blackstock, who sacked the quarterback once and caused two hurried passes. The defense also contained all-everything running back Kevin Jones, who ended the game with just 75 yards on the ground on 25 carries.

Three Virginia players received ACC Player of the Week honors for their efforts. They include quarterback Matt Schaub, running back Alvin Pearman and tight end Heath Miller. See the link below for the full report.

Sunday, UVa defeated High Point 79-64. Freshman Donte Minter led the team with 13 points, while Derrick Byars scored 12 and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Five UVa players scored in double figures.

Wednesday night, UVa squared off against Minnesota in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Elton Brown put in a career-high 26 points and grabbed six rebounds. This was Brown's first 'complete' game of the year. Gary Forbes put in 22 points and Derrick Byars added 16 points. Both players grabbed nine rebounds, but it was senior forward Devin Smith that ripped down a team-high 10 boards in just 25 minutes of play to lead the team.

    Cavalier Football Walk

Thousands of fans came out early to support the UVa football team Saturday morning for the Cavalier Football Walk. The football team, led by police motorcycle escort and Coach Al Groh, stepped off the bus around 10:30 AM at Thornton Hall. They were greeted by tons of rowdy fans as they walked several blocks down Engineer's Way, onto Whitehead Road, then onto Stadium Road and into the lower level of Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium. The streets and sidewalks were covered with fans dressed in orange and blue, many holding UVa flags, signs or other displays of support, including many hanged stuffed or rubber turkeys.

It was evident from the players' reactions that they were not expecting such a large number of fans. After the game, Muffin Curry and Marques Hagans explained that it was a pleasant surprise and one of the reasons for the team's excellent performance that day.

Look for photos from the Walk in the Sabre Edge Photo Gallery next week.
