Wahoo fans, Football season is almost over, and basketball season begins for the Hoos this weekend. Over the course of the next couple of weeks, the Hoos will be playing several games right here at home in Charlottesville. The Cavalier football team hosts Georgia Tech tomorrow at noon, then will host Virginia Tech next Saturday (time will be announced Monday). The UVa men's basketball team has finished their preseason exhibition schedule and will face Mount St. Mary's this Sunday night at 7:00 PM at University Hall for their season opener. General admission tickets are still available for this game. This is a good opportunity for all to get out there and support the team while seeing several new Wahoos in action. Virginia brought in a highly touted recruiting class that includes Gary Forbes, J.R. Reynolds, Donte Minter, T.J. Bannister and Jason Cain. Most, if not all, should see action in Sunday's game. Go Hoos!

This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne UVA signed two basketball recruits this week to Letters of Intent: William Penn Charter (PA) 5-11, 170-pound point guard Sean Singletary and Brewster Academy (NH) 6-7, 200-pound wing Adrian Joseph. The Cavs have a commitment from Montrose Christian Academy (MD) center Tunji Soroye, who is 6-11, 210 pounds. Soroye will sign with Virginia in the spring of 2004. These three prospects make up a very solid 2003-2004 recruiting class. Singletary is rated as one of the top point guards in the country, while Joseph is one of the top 150 players overall. Soroye displays excellent defensive skills and the ability to run the floor.

Virginia to face Georgia Tech Virginia will face Georgia Tech at Scott Stadium tomorrow, November 22nd at noon. The game will be televised by Jefferson Pilot Sports. The Cavaliers are in desperate need of a win after dropping their last four conference games. They stand at 5-5 on the season (3-4 ACC) and need one more win to be eligible for a post-season bowl game. Good news for the Hoos? This game is at home, a place where Virginia has seldom struggled the past two years. This season's only home defeat was to Florida State. Last season, the Hoos only lost one home game as well, their opener against Colorado State. The Hoos will have two chances over the next two weekends to secure their sixth win, but their chances may be better against unranked Georgia Tech than against 12th ranked Virginia Tech on the 29th. For information on the Georgia Tech game, including a preview, weather report, parking info, articles, radio broadcast info, depth chart, roster card and media notes, please see the link below.
Tight end Heath Miller named semifinalist for Mackey Award University of Virginia sophomore Heath Miller is one of eight semifinalists for the 2003 John Mackey Award, the Nassau County (N.Y.) Sports Commission announced. The John Mackey Award is awarded annually to the nation's best collegiate tight end. Other semifinalists include Chris Cooley (Utah State), Matt Herian (Nebraska), Ben Moa (Utah), Ben Troupe (Florida), Ben Utecht (Minnesota), Kris Wilson (Pittsburgh), and Kellen Winslow II (Miami).
ABC takes six-day option for UVa-VT football game Virginia and Virginia Tech fans will have to wait a few more days before knowing the kickoff time for the November 29th contest at Scott Stadium. ABC-TV has taken a six-day option for the announcement of the time. The television network will be broadcasting the game, it's just not decided whether it will be a 1:00 PM or 8:00 PM start. A decision will be made this Sunday. Virginia escapes Dasani All Stars The Virginia men's basketball team got as much as they could handle from the Coaches vs. Cancer Dasani All-Stars on Tuesday night. Virginia held a 17-point lead midway through the second half, but the Dasani team stepped it up offensively and took a two-point lead with less than five seconds remaining in the game. After a missed free throw, the Hoos pushed the ball up the floor quickly to senior guard Tood Billet. Billet hung in the air while avoiding a block from behind, and drained a three-pointer to win the game at the buzzer, making the final score 91-90. For the second straight exhibition, the star for Virginia was sophomore Derrick Byars. Byars finished the game with 21 points on 9 of 12 shooting (3 of 4 from behind the arc) and 8 rebounds. In the previous exhibition, Byars nailed 10 of 11 shots for 25 points, snagged 5 rebounds and hit 4 of his 5 shots from behind the arc. Coach Gillen states that he has no stars of yet, but Byars appears to be shining brightly at this point. Freshman center Donte Minter had yet another big time exhibition game. In the first exhibition, he hit a perfect 7 for 7 from the field. This time around? 8 for 11 with 8 rebounds and 2 for 2 from the free throw line. Minter is proving to be a strong complement to Brown as an inside threat. Brown had a strong performance against Dasani as well, finishing with 20 points and snagging 10 rebounds. For more on the game, including a box score and post game articles, please see the link below.
Virginia basketball gets two signees 5-11 point guard Sean Singletary and 6-7 small forward Adrian Joseph have signed letters of intent to play for the University of Virginia. Both are eligible for play next season. Singletary, of Philadephia, PA, is highly touted and will be the future point guard for the program. The point guard's assets are his speed, defensive play and court vision. Most times, Singletary has made up his mind and passed the ball prior to getting across half court. While passing is his specialty, Singletary is not shy when shooting the ball and can hit the open shot when needed. Singletary averaged 18 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and almost 5 steals per game as a junior while leading his team to their league championship and a 26-4 record. Joseph, a native of Trinidad, is currently attending Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. He averaged 15 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks as a junior last season. Virginia soccer plays in opening round of NCAA tonight The UVa men's soccer team had a bumpy season this year, but still managed to win the ACC Championship and get into the first round of the NCAA Tournament. They will suit up tonight at 7:00 PM to face Seton Hall at Klockner Stadium here in Charlottesville. The game will be a rematch of the season opener when Virginia lost to the Pirates 1-0 at Klockner. Seton Hall scored a quick goal in the opening seconds of the contest. To read our Sabre Edge article about the team's up and down season and ACC Championship win, please see the link below:

Virginia baseball snags excellent recruiting class Virginia baseball is on the rise - new stadium, new coach and now some new players. Head Coach Brian O'Connor announced the signing of a stellar 10-member recruiting class this week. The class ranks in the Top 20 nationally by TeamOneBaseball.com and could be the best class ever signed in the history of the program. "This is an outstanding class!" exclaimed O'Connor. "Our coaching staff is ecstatic about the talent that these prospects will be bringing to the University of Virginia. This class will set a precedent for future recruiting classes here at UVa."
