This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

What a week for Virginia! The Cavaliers added two more commitments this week, with Charlottesville linebacker Devonta Brown and Pottstown (PA) cornerback Chris Gorham committing to the 'Hoos. Virginia now has 13 commitments for the 2004 recruiting class.

CB Brown Doing Well
Update on Virginia commitment Philip Brown, cornerback at Hargrave Military Academy. Hargrave Recruiting Coordinator Chris Wagner says the former Phoebus star is doing very well at Hargrave both on and off the field.

Mitchum Takes First Official Visit
Outstanding McDowell High School (Erie, PA) offensive lineman Kyle Mitchum made an official visit to Iowa last weekend. He enjoyed his trip, and looks ahead to an official to Wisconsin (December 6th) and Tennessee (December 13th). Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Virginia, and North Carolina are vying for the final two spots.

Mack Frost Narrowing List
Mack Frost, a 6-5, 250 pound defensive end from Spring Valley High School (Columbia, SC), has set up official visits to Maryland (12/13/03) and Virginia (01/23/04). Frost indicated he would only take three or four visits, which will be to his finalists.

Commitment Profile: Scott Deke
Profile on Loyola (Los Angeles, CA) quarterback Scott Deke, who has committed to Virginia. Deke is hoping to lead Loyola to a state championship this season, which is his first full season as the starting quarterback.

Three Visits Set for Bullock
Northern Durham (NC) linebacker Chase Bullock says Maryland, Virginia, and South Carolina are the main school he is considering at this point. He has set official visits to all three - MD (12/06/03), VA (01/16/04), and SC (01/23/04).

Interest Rising for West Charlotte DB
According to West Charlotte Head Coach Pete Gilchrist, cornerback Rod Council will make an unofficial visit to Virginia Tech this weekend for the Miami game. Council has taken official visits to Notre Dame, Virginia, and Michigan. Gilchrist feels there is no "clear-cut" leader among the three.

Q & A: Chris Gorham
Question and answer session with Virginia's 13the commitment for the 2004 class. Gorham is a cornerback prospect from Pottstown HS in Pottstown, PA.

Devonta Brown Discusses Commitment
Devonta Brown became the 12th commitment to the Cavaliers 2004 recruiting class, announcing publicly a verbal commitment he made almost one month ago. The Charlottesville HS talent will play inside linebacker in college.

Big-Time OL Narrows List
Leon Hart will make official visits to South Carolina, Auburn, Virginia, and Ohio State. No dates have been set. Maryland and Georgia are vying for the final visit. Hart wants to make all of his trips before deciding.

Royal Adds Offer, Sets Visits
Virginia has not been actively pursuing Westfield (VA) wide receiver Eddie Royal in recent weeks. Royal has visits set to Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

   News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

Virginia defeats Troy State

The Virginia football program got back on the winning track with a 24-0 victory over the Trojans of Troy State last Saturday. The Cavaliers built a commanding 24-0 halftime lead before using the second half as a live practice. While fans were bored with the second half, and maybe a little bit disappointed, the plays that Coach Groh was attempting (especially the running plays) may be essential to the development of the team for the last four games of the season.

Even with the second half performance, fans should still be pleased with the result. UVa dominated the first half, posted a shut out, got the win and got some valuable work done with regard to the running game. It's hard to see many flaws in that.

Rivers and Schaub battle this Saturday in Raleigh

The battle for second place in the ACC begins in Raleigh, North Carolina tomorrow when Virginia travels to face N.C. State. Both teams have two losses each in the conference. The winner of tomorrow's 3:30 (ABC) contest will take the lead for second place. If Virginia can win, they will face both Maryland and Georgia Tech in the coming weeks with a chance to secure their finish. The Cavaliers' destiny is truly in their own hands at this point, and a win over the Pack gives them the upper hand.

Leading the way for the Hoos tomorrow will be senior quarterback Matt Schaub. Schaub currently leads the nation in pass completion percentage with 71 percent, just barely ahead of N.C. State's Philip Rivers. Schaub has thrown for over 1,400 yards and nine touchdowns in his five starts since coming back from a severe shoulder separation.

UVa will be facing one of the nation's weakest defenses tomorrow. N.C. State ranks 112th out of 117 Division 1-A teams against the pass, and 71st in scoring defense. If the Cavaliers can manage any success with the run, it should be open season with the pass most of the afternoon. Now we know why Coach Groh was trying to run the ball against Troy State, rather than lighting it up through the air.

N.C. State's strength is their passing game, where they rank 4th nationally. What may hurt them is their ability to have success on the ground. With a healthy T.A. McLendon, the Pack could do some serious damage. But McLendon is hobbling into this game, and without him N.C. State has major problems. With McLendon being injured most of the season, N.C. State comes in at 115th nationally in rushing offense, just ahead of Western Michigan and Army. If McClendon cannot product tomorrow, UVa could quite possibly shut the Pack down. While State has a strong passing offense, Virginia's strength is their pass defense and their ability to get to the quarterback.

  •    What's New on TheSabre.com?

Sabre Edge celebrates its one-year anniversary

Just want to say a heartfelt thanks to all who have subscribed to Sabre Edge on behalf of all of us here at TheSabre. The response to the new subscription package has been simply overwhelming and most gratifying. We've enjoyed bringing you all the new content.

We are also most appreciative of all the valuable feedback you have provided - We try to give you what you want, so please keep the suggestions coming. The good news for you subscribers is that we've got some really great new features on the way, and we think you'll be very pleased.

A special thanks to Chris Horne, the hardest working man in college recruiting, and our excellent staff of writers. In case you didn't know, Chris was one of the very first to provide recruiting information on the Hoos via the Internet. In 1996, when TheSabre.com first started, I used to depend on Horne's ability to get the scoop in Virginia's recruits. Chris was one of the first to break the Antwoine Womack to UVa story, while many assumed he was heading to Penn State. We're lucky to have had the opportunity to bring Chris aboard and his tireless work has been essential to the development and success of Sabre Edge.

Sabre Edge has come a long way from its inception on October 31st of last year. Many of you are probably thinking, "Hey, I have been subscribing for more than a year, so how can this be the anniversary?" Well, you're partially correct. Sabre Edge was born from a concept that we had back in 1999 called the Sabre Newsletter. SN was originally packaged with The 1st Team, a fairly expensive package ($100 per year) that included the Sabre Newsletter, a 1st Team t-shirt, 10 percent off TheSabreShop.com items, a special logo next to your message board name and a 1st Team card that gave you discounts to many local shops and restaurants in the Charlottesville area. With only a couple of hundred subscribers, we realized that this package was for the extreme fans only and it died before it really got very far off the ground.

We restructured the subscription a few months later and decided offer up only the Sabre Newsletter, a bi-monthly and eventual monthly-only subscription. More than 1,000 subscribers jumped on board over a couple of years and made that program a success. Still, something was missing. We couldn't really deliver time-sensitive information in a once per month offering. But we're not print media and restricted with regard to print costs and time-sensitive information. With the old format, we weren't capitalizing on the format that the Internet allows - immediacy. The Internet is about real-time information - no need to wait on the guys in the print department to send out the news the next day, week or month. Also, there was a need for recruiting information as well, and so was born Sabre Edge - a product of hundreds of suggestions over a five-year span.

Well, it's safe to say that you are getting what you asked for. Sabre Edge is a subscription-based area that includes a private message board, photo gallery, almost daily recruiting updates and tons of content from various writers, including columns, special features, interviews and more. Thus far, it's been a big success. And we're planning a lot more in the future, so stay tuned.

Again, special thanks to everyone who has subscribed to Sabre Edge and helped to make TheSabre.com a success. We could not have done it without you and your suggestions over the years.

For those who are still have not subscribed to Sabre Edge, give us a try. If you aren't satisfied, we'll refund your subscription price. Sabre Edge is available in three options, monthly at $4.95, quarterly at $10.95 or yearly at $34.95 (that works out to just $2.91 per month or 9 cents per day). Give us a try. Click the link below for more information and to sign up. If you already have a SabreShop account with us, use that info to sign up. If you need assistance, shoot me an email at [email protected] and I'll be happy to walk you through it.

Sabre Edge subscribers and Internet Explorer

Some subscribers who use Microsoft's Internet Explorer have had periodic problems accessing Sabre Edge. The reasons for Internet Explorer's defects are not certain, and the problems seem to range through most of their browser versions, especially IE 5.0. We want you to know that there are other options for you. You do not have to stick with Microsoft IE. Many of the programmers and systems administrators around the planet simply do not use this browser (and they are reluctant to use most any of Microsoft's products), but unfortunately it seems to be the browser of choice since it comes automatically loaded on your computer at the time of purchase.

We'd like to suggest a couple options for those who are simply fed up with the problems, glitches and other weird happenings with IE. With the two browsers listed below, no one has complained to us about access problems with Sabre Edge, unless they were work related (i.e. strong firewalls with additional security measures preventing the allowance of cookies on your system).

If you are having access problems with Sabre Edge, try one of these capable browsers. I'd suggest Firebird above Netscape since the file is smaller and Netscape has been known to have other problems or glitches (but not with our site). Also, Mozilla's Firebird is very similar to Internet Explorer, but with far fewer problems.

      Mozilla's Firebird

Click the link below. On the left hand side of the page, look for Mozilla Firebird 0.7. Of the three bullet points, choose the appropriate operating system for your computer. If you don't know what you have, then you are probably using Windows. Once you click this link, you can save or open the file and start the download process.

    • Mozilla Firebird

      Netscape 7.1 Navigator

Like Mozilla and Internet Explorer, Netscape has been around for many years and is the usual alternative to Internet Explorer. While there are some small bugs with this program, there aren't many known problems associated with this browser and access any of our store or subscriber areas. Depending on what format you download, Netscape could be a very large program to download. If you are not logged in on a high speed connection, I would recommend waiting until late at night before downloading.

    • Netscape Navigator

As always, we want to know if you are having any problems with Sabre Edge, whether it be accessing the log in area, navigating the subscriber area or anything. Please email us and let us know if you are having problems and we will work with you to get you access and make your subscription an enjoyable experience. Also, feel free to email us if you have suggestions or comment on the service. We love hearing from you.

We want to hear from you

TheSabre.com cares about its customers and site visitors. We understand that we would not be able to exist without the support of the over one hundred thousand fans who frequent our site every month. We also understand that there's always room for improvement. Over the seven years this site has been in existence, we've grown and improved our services through suggestions and comments from you. In an effort to continually improve, we will provide a different question each week asking how you think we're doing with regard to different aspects of the site, store or whatever.

This week's question: Have you stopped by the SabreShop game day sales tent? If so, what one item would you like to see for sale at that location? Please send your email suggestion to [email protected].

And as always, if you have a problem regarding your account, or just want to drop a line to say hello, please email Michael Ingalls and [email protected]. Thank you for making our site a success.
