This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Chris Horne breaks down recruiting for us this week in Sabre Edge. The links below take you to expanded articles and information on each recruit. If you're not a member of Sabre each, click here to join!

Nwankwo to Wait on Decision?
6-9, 240 pound Davis Nwankwo was close to a decision between Arizona and Stanford, however will now wait until the spring signing period to make his decision. Arizona, Stanford, Virginia, and Georgia Tech are the front runners for the talented big man from Georgetown Prep in Bethesda, Maryland. UVA may hold a scholarship for Nwankwo or take another big man in the fall signing period. Montrose Christian (MD) center Tunji Soroye will take an official visit to Virginia this weekend. He has not received a Virginia scholarship offer yet according to Rivals.com.

Emanuel Willis Set for First Visit
Hargrave Military Academy power forward prospect Emanuel Willis not only looks like Kenyon Martin, but he has the same unbelievable athletic ability. The 6-7½, 220 pound Willis will take an official visit to Martin's alma mater, the Cincinnati Bearcats, this weekend. Virginia, Virginia Tech, Southern California, and South Carolina join Cincinnati as Willis' top five schools.

Brad Allen Updates Recruiting
One of the top tight end prospects in Florida, Brad Allen will make his first official visit this weekend to Vanderbilt University. He has set a tentative date with Virginia for November 22nd for an official visit. UNC will receive another official, and these three programs look to be on the top of his list right now. Look for a December or early January decision from Allen, who wants to major in Pre-Med.

Stoltz Puts Visit on Hold
Matt Stoltz would like to have taken an official visit to Virginia this weekend, however due to scheduling conflicts he cannot make the trip. The talented linebacker from Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas, may re-schedule his visit for January 17th. Virginia, LSU, Tennessee, Nebraska, and Arkansas make up the top five schools here.

Bullock to Commit?
How good is Chase Bullock? Well, in a victory over Southeast Raleigh earlier this year, he made an astounding 23 tackles. He has over 100 tackles in eight games. Even better for UVA fans, Bullock may commit to the Cavaliers on his unofficial visit this weekend. Virginia is his clear leader and hopes to close the deal this weekend.

Bell Sets Decision Date
Outstanding Jack Britt High School (Fayetteville, NC) running back George Bell will announce his collegiate decision next Thursday, October 23rd during a press conference. Bell will likely choose between NC State, Virginia Tech, and Michigan. He was supposed to visit Virginia this weekend, however the visit is in doubt at this point. Virginia does not have much of a shot to land him, especially since the Cavaliers have not offered a scholarship.

Santi Moves Up Visit Date
Tom Santi, a top tight end who plays for one of the top programs in the nation (Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, TN, is ranked #13 in the USA Today High School rankings), moved up his official visit to UVA for this weekend. UVA and Iowa are his top two schools right now. He has offers from both of those programs as well as Tennessee, LSU, and more. Santi is not expected to make a decision after this visit, though he really likes UVA and anything can happen in recruiting.

Shuman Continues Fork Union Success
Coach John Shuman continues his success at one of the best prep schools in the country. Fork Union boasts some great athletes this year that the Cavaliers are keeping an eye on, including 2003 signee James Terry and LB Maurice Reevey. Terry has re-committed to the Cavaliers.

Leader for Kecougtan Star?
Jerod Mayo said if he decided today, he would choose Virginia. That's good news for Cavalier fans. The bad news is.he's not deciding today. Mayo has scheduled official visits to NC State for December 5th, Virginia for December 12th, Purdue for December 19th, and Virginia Tech for January 30th. Tennessee, UNC, and Clemson are vying for the final official visit slot. Mayo indicated he is going to make all of his official visits before announcing his decision sometime around Signing Day.

Hicks Sets First Official Visit
Kent Hicks, the outstanding safety prospect from Culpeper High School in Culpeper, Virginia, will make an official visit to Virginia this weekend. His top five consists of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Maryland, and Tennessee. Look for him to make all five officials before deciding.

More on Maurice Covington
This piece includes comments from Southern Durham Head Coach Gordon Walters on WR/OLB Maurice Covington, UVA's second commitment for the 2005 class. The Cavaliers have offered two more Southern Durham prospects in 6-3, 210 pound FB/DB Charles Gamble and 6-3, 200 pound WR/DB Brandon Woods.

Virginia falls to Clemson in OT

The Cavalier football program picked up their second loss of the season when they failed to overcome the Clemson Tigers in overtime, 30-27. The Hoos fought hard throughout the contest, fighting back from a 10-0 halftime deficit to take an eventual seven-point lead. But Clemson stormed back to take a seven-point lead late in the fourth quarter.

Virginia worked some late-game magic when Alvin Pearman scored on a rushing touchdown with less than a minute on the clock. The Hoos had one last try in regulation to win it, but Matt Schaub was intercepted with 32 seconds remaining and the Tigers elected to run out the clock and send the game into overtime.

The Cavaliers could only manage a field goal in overtime. Clemson took advantage of the situation, and on the fifth play of their drive, Tiger quarterback Charlie Whitehurst lofted a high pass to receiver Kevin Youngblood for the game-deciding touchdown. The pass and catch were similar to winning play of UVa quarterback Bryson Spinner's pass to receiver Billy McMullen at Clemson just two years ago.

The Hoos fall to 3-1 in the conference and 4-2 overall. A win over Florida State Saturday would put Virginia back in the hunt for the ACC Championship. For more news and stats on the game, please see the link below.

Shades of 1995? Highly-ranked FSU comes to Scott for ESPN night game

Flash back to the fall of 1995. Number two Florida State was coming to Charlottesville to face a Virginia team trying to make a name for itself. That Virginia team had a sharp, experienced quarterback with a lot of offensive weapons and a tough offensive line. They had a defense that had some big stars and was gradually pulling themselves together as a good unit. And there was a freshman playmaker that would have the breakout game of his career.

There are a lot of similarities to this Saturday's team and the game itself. Both were ESPN night games. Both were past the midway point of the season. Both had FSU sitting in the top ten and Virginia struggling to stay in the Top 25. Both had similar types of players on both sides of the ball. The quarterback was Mike Groh, now it's Matt Schaub. The running back was Tiki Barber, now it's Lundy/Pearman. The freshman superstar defensive player was Anthony Poindexter, now it's Ahmad Brooks. The experienced defensive backs were Ronde Barber, now it's Muffin Curry and Jamaine Winborne.

The 1995 team's legacy was that of a tough, talented team that could play with anyone, but lost several games in the final moments (Michigan, Texas and Virginia Tech). But, throughout the disappointments they were able to fight and win some tough games, like the aforementioned FSU game and against Georgia in the Peach Bowl later that year.

This Virginia team is young and trying to make a name for itself. They've played some tough contests this season, a couple that they'd probably like to have back. The game against FSU represents as much for them as it did for the team in 1995. A win would help to establish Virginia as a contender for the ACC crown and, in terms of winning the conference, would put destiny in their hands. One thing's for sure. The atmosphere of Saturday's game will likely match that of the game in 1995.

Game time is set for 7:45 PM this Saturday, October 18th. ESPN will be televising the contest nationally.

Boston College to become ACC's 12th member

Last Sunday, the member schools of the Atlantic Coast Conference extended an offer to Boston College to become the conference's 12th member school. B.C. accepted the invitation. Having a total of 12 member schools allows the ACC to conduct a conference football championship, adding an additional game for two teams and bringing in a substantial amount of revenue for the conference.
