News, Rumors and Fan Discussion | |||||
Virginia sacks North Carolina
Freshman receiver Fontel Mines broke into the spotlight as well, catching a touchdown on his first ever college reception and snagging two other passes for a total of 45 yards. His touchdown catch makes him the second true freshman receiver this year to have his first collegiate catch go for a touchdown. Deyon Williams did the same against Western Michigan. Defensively the Cavs found their stride, limiting Carolina to just 58 yards rushing and sacking the normally elusive Darian Durant five times. Linebackers Darryl Blackstock, Ray Mann, Ahmad Brooks and Mark Miller all were in on at least one sack apiece. Cornerback Jamaine Winborne caused a fumble in Carolina's backfield that was recovered by Blackstock.
Schaub to participate in live chat this Monday
The 2002 ACC Player of the Year and First-Team All-ACC honoree, Schaub set or tied as many as 10 single-season records and led the conference with 28 touchdown passes last fall. He finished second nationally in completion percentage (68.9) and sixth nationally in efficiency (147.5) as a junior. He is also on the watch lists for the Davey O'Brien Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. In the last two weeks, Schaub has led the Cavaliers to two consecutive wins- both in the ACC- and a national ranking after returning to action following a two-game absence due to a shoulder injury. The senior turned in the best performance of his career last week at North Carolina, completing 19-of-22 passes for a career-high 86.4 percent, 284 yards, and two touchdowns. He also tallied a career-best in passing efficiency with 224.80 points. In the two games since his return, Schaub has completed 49-of-67 passes (73.1 percent) for 610 yards and four touchdowns. More ACC Weekly honors for Hoos UVa linebacker Darryl Blackstock and offensive lineman D'Brickashaw Ferguson each received ACC weekly honors for their efforts in the win over North Carolina last Saturday. Blackstock earned the Defensive Back of the Week honor with six tackles (four solo), one fumble recovery and two sacks. Ferguson took home the Offensive Lineman of the Week honor by grading out at 90 percent. Ferguson allowed no sacks against Carolina and helped UVa to roll over the Heels with 229 rushing yards.
Cavaliers travel to Clemson this Saturday The Hoos will take their undefeated ACC record to Clemson this Saturday to face the Tigers in Death Valley. Clemson is coming off a 21-7 loss to Maryland in College Park last weekend and stands at 1-1 in the conference and 3-2 overall. Virginia has won the last two over the Tigers and they're 7-5-1 since before 1990, when Clemson held an embarrassing 29-0 record over the Hoos. The game will be televised by Jefferson-Pilot Sports. Please check your local listings. For news, weather info, stats, and other general information regarding the game, please see the link below.
UVa-Florida State football game time set Virginia will host Florida State at Scott Stadium Saturday, October 18th at 7:45 PM. The game will be televised by either ESPN or ESPN2, which will not be decided until this Monday. If Virginia can defeat Clemson this Saturday, this match-up will decide the front-runner for the ACC Championship. A win by the Hoos over the Tigers would put both UVa and FSU undefeated in the league at 4-0. FSU plays a non-conference game against the second-ranked Miami Hurricanes this weekend in Tallahassee. Note: The University of Virginia could host ESPN's Game Day on October 18th. Sources are saying that this will be determined by the outcomes of both Virginia's and Florida State's games this weekend. If both teams win, expect the ESPN Game Day crew to be on grounds. Location has not been determined at this time. If this materializes, look for a SabreMail Breaking News story sometime after this weekend. BC rumored to be 12th ACC team Boston College could be the next ACC member school, according to several news reports. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, nine ACC presidents will meet over the course of the next few days to vote on Boston College to enter the conference. A twelfth ACC team would allow the Atlantic Coast Conference to have a football championship game. Without a twelfth member, the NCAA may not allow a conference championship, which would hurt the ACC financially with Virginia Tech and Miami entering the league next season.
Men's lacrosse names 2004 captains University of Virginia men's lacrosse coach Dom Starsia announced that defenseman Brett Hughes, goalie Tillman Johnson, midfielder Ted Lamade, and attackman Justin Mullen have been selected team captains for the 2004 season.

Pre-register for the event and give yourself a chance to win a tailgate spot for the upcoming UVa-FSU game at Scott Stadium and an autographed helmet signed by George Welsh, Shawn Moore and Chris Slade. VMDO Architects receives awards for design of UVa's baseball stadium The Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects (VSAIA) has bestowed VMDO Architects of Charlottesville, VA (116 2nd St.) with an Honor Award this year for their well-received design of the University of Virginia's Davenport Baseball Stadium. The Central Virginia Chapter of the VSAIA has also acknowledged the local firm with a Merit Award for the Cavaliers new baseball facilities. "We feel proud that our colleagues have chosen to recognize the quality of our work on the baseball stadium project," says lead VMDO architect Joe Celentano. "It is especially satisfying given the extremely compressed design and construction schedule and could not have been accomplished without a completely integrated team effort between the owner, architect, and contractor." Davenport Field, now considered to be one of the best places to watch and play baseball in the Atlantic Coast Conference, was funded in part from $2 million in gifts from anonymous donors, which enabled the University of Virginia to move ahead with the baseball field's renovation and expansion. VMDO's design included such amenities as a canopied grandstand with 1,600 seats to replace the existing metal-seat bleachers, and six skyboxes for lease by fans and corporate sponsors. New stadium lighting was also installed, as well as an on-site locker room and clubhouse, a press box, concession area, and a grass-filled seating area. VMDO Architects was founded in 1976 and is the 2003 recipient of the T. David Fitz-Gibbon "Architecture Firm of the Year" Award from the Virginia Society of American Institute of Architects.
For further information about VMDO Architects, please contact Jennifer Pullinger at 434.296.5684, email at [email protected] or visit our website at www.vmdo.com.
