Cavaliers win on Hughes' and Winborne's late-game heroics
As mentioned above, there were quite a few heroes on the day for the Hoos. Matt Schaub returned to action for the first time since the opening drive against Duke over a month ago. Schaub came out hot, completing 30 of his 45 pass attempts for 326 yards and two touchdowns. Schaub also showed some guts, breaking free from an apparent sack and diving into the end zone for a crucial two-point conversation to tie the game at the start of the fourth quarter. Virginia's defense should get some credit as well. While they did give up 47-yard touchdown pass to Wake in the third quarter, they dug down deep when the team needed it the most. When Virginia was coming back, Schaub threw two interceptions late in the game. Wake was unable to capitalize on either turnover. On a game-deciding 4th and 2 on UVa's 8-yard line, the Cavalier defense stopped Wake Forest to give Schaub a chance to move the team down the field for the tying score. And let's not forget Winborne's interception that put Virginia in field goal range to win the game, rather than going to overtime. This was a character-building win for the Hoos over an improving Wake Forest team. The win puts UVa at 2-0 in the conference and 3-1 overall, which puts them off to a better start than last year's 9-5 bowl-winning team (the 2002 team started 2-2). For news and stats for the Wake game, please see the game news link below.
Three Cavaliers earn ACC Weekly honors
Kicker Connor Hughes captured his first ACC honor as the league's Specialist of the Week. Hughes' kicking performance won the 27-24 game with Wake Forest as he converted a 38-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining to get the win. The sophomore remained perfect, converting 4-for-4 on field goals and 1-for-1 on extra points. His game tying 53-yard field goal in the fourth quarter was the longest of his career (topping his previous career-high of 48 yards vs. Western Michigan) and the longest UVa field goal made at Scott Stadium. The 53-yarder is also the third longest in school history and the longest since Rafael Garcia boomed a 56-yarder in 1995 (against Texas). Hughes' four field goals are also the second-most in school history. Tight end Heath Miller was also tabbed with his first Offensive Lineman of the Week honor. In the win over Wake Forest, Miller made a spectacular touchdown catch over a Wake defender in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 21-21. The sophomore led all receivers with 94 yards on seven catches (both career-high figures), including a 26-yard grab. All seven receptions resulted in either a field goal or touchdown. Miller caught a 13-yard pass to get UVA out from deep in its own territory on the team's drive that resulted in the game-tying field goal. He had a 15-yard reception on the final drive to put the ball on the 19 for Hughes' game-winning field goal. Cornerback Jamaine Winborne took home Defensive Back of the Week recognition. Winborne was on fire once again in UVa's win over Wake Forest. His interception with less than a minute to play in the game was crucial to UVa's scoring efforts and led to the victory. The senior ran the ball back for 20 yards to put the ball in Wake territory for Hughes' 38-yard game-winning field goal. Winborne also recorded a career-high nine tackles, including seven solos. The ACC honor is the second in Winborne's career. He earned ACC honors for the first time last season following his performance against NC State. Cavaliers to take on North Carolina this weekend The UVa football team will go on the road again this week when they face North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The Hoos, 3-1 on the season and undefeated in conference play, are playing a road game for the third time in the last four contests. North Carolina is coming off a 47-34 loss to N.C. State and they stand 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference. North Carolina boasts a potent offense. Even with a shutout loss to FSU to open the season, the Heels still have the nation's 12th best passing offense at 308 yards per game. Quarterback Darian Durant has passed for 923 yards in four games, including 325 against the Wolfpack last week. Where Carolina struggles is on the defensive end, where they are proudly ranked dead last among all Division 1-A programs in total defense. The Heels are giving up 522 yards per game to their opponents, over 300 of that through the air. With Matt Schaub's successful return to the field last Saturday, this could be a very high scoring game. Even though this contest is in Chapel Hill, the edge has to go to Virginia on this one. The Cavaliers' defense is much improved over last season and should give Durant some fits. While UNC's best asset is their passing game, UVa's is best when defending against it. Game time for the contest is 1:30 PM. The game will not be televised, so if you want to watch it, you're going to have to make a trip to the game. A limited number of tickets are still available through the UNC Ticket Office at 1-800-722-4335. Get down there and support your Hoos! ACC announces two-year plan for future football schedules The Atlantic Coast Conference came up with a football schedule Wednesday that forces four schools to play all three of the conference's powers in each of the next two seasons.
Virginia's ACC schedule for 2004 The Hoos will have their hands full in 2004 with the addition of Virginia Tech and Miami to the conference. In conference, the Hoos will have to face both VT and Miami, in addition to Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Clemson and Duke. Virginia will not have to play Wake Forest or N.C. State. The Cavaliers are currently scheduled to play Syracuse and Akron as out of conference opponents for 2004. With the addition of Virginia Tech to the ACC, UVa will have to seek an additional out of conference opponent to fill the void. With three of the above mentioned conference teams currently residing in the Top 5, and Maryland as a solid Top 25 program, the Hoos may elect to go with easy opponent to round things out. If not, the Hoos are sure to have one of the nation's most difficult schedules, if not THE most difficult. Click the link below to view a composite schedule for all ACC teams for next season (courtesy of BigDave).
Game time set for road game with Clemson The Virginia football team will travel to Clemson on October 11th. Game time has been set for a noon kickoff, with Jefferson-Pilot Sports televising the contest regionally. Please check your local listings for information. You can expect to see up to date information on the game at the link below.
