This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Virginia hosts three basketball prospects for official visits this weekend - UVA verbal Sean Singletary, Brewster Academy (NH) 6-7, 200 pound wing forward Adrian Joseph, and 6-9, 225 pound Davis Nwankwo from Georgetown Prep (MD). Nwankwo is likely down to Stanford and Arizona, according to sources, while Joseph has the Cavs as one of his favorite schools along with Maryland, Pittsburgh, Villanova, and Penn State. UVA football hosts at least two recruits on official visits this weekend - JH Rose (NC) running back Andre Brown and Pottstown (PA) cornerback Chris Gorham. This will be the first visit for Brown, who is also considering Tennessee, Miami (FL), Nebraska, and NC State. Gorham, who visited Notre Dame last weekend, will likely decide among the Irish, Cavaliers, and Georgia Tech. Another Cavalier target visited Notre Dame last weekend, and that was West Charlotte (NC) cornerback Rod Council. Council enjoyed his visit and now lists Notre Dame as his favorite over UVA (10/18/03 visit), Michigan, and Virginia Tech. He has offers from all four and will visit all four before deciding. The Cavaliers have still not offered Eddie Royal, the outstanding wide receiver from Chantilly, VA. Royal set his first official visit recently, with the lucky team being Tennessee on December 12th. He will likely make official visits to Virginia Tech and Marshall as well and hopes to use up all five visits. UVA is still heavily recruiting him although he is growing frustrated with no offer. UVA may be on the outside looking in for Dwayne Hendricks, the talented defensive end from Millsville HS (NJ). Hendricks plans on visiting UVA unofficially for the Virginia Tech game, which is some good news. Miami (FL), Iowa, and Michigan are three schools that will definitely receive official visits. Montgomery Bell Academy (TN) tight end Tom Santi will visit UVA for the Virginia Tech game on November 29th. Santi likes the Cavs a lot and, though he mentioned that he has not narrowed his list down, was really enthusiastic about Coach Ross and Coach Heck. Santi expects to receive an offer on his official visit. Tennessee and LSU headline the list of teams that have offered so far.

News, Rumors and Fan Discussion | ||||||
Virginia football to host Wake Saturday After almost of month of no home football games, the Cavalier return to Scott Stadium tomorrow to face a rising Wake Forest football program. Jim Grobe, now in his third season as head coach of the Demon Deacons, has resurrected the Wake program. Not long ago, the Deacons were the whipping boys in the ACC, often battling Duke to finish second to last in the conference. Wake had moments of glory here and there, but they never really got off to the type of season they're having this year. Wake stands at 3-1 on the season. They defeated Boston College on the road, #14 N.C. State at home and just took down East Carolina last weekend. Their only loss was a 16-10 decision to Purdue on ESPN. The Deacons run an interesting passing offense that's hard to defend, so Virginia's defense is sure to be tested. But, Wake hasn't exactly put up great numbers as yet. They rank 96th in the nation as a passing offense. Defensively, Wake is still finding itself. They rank 99th in total defense nationally and 109th in passing defense. With the possibility of UVa's Matt Schaub returning at quarterback, the Deacons could find themselves in trouble trying to keep pace with Virginia's ability to score. The key for Wake is to be successful running the ball in order to keep Virginia's offense off the field. That could be tough for Wake. They're ranked 63rd in the nation as a rushing team. While statistics are great, it doesn't really tell you what will happen on the field. Turnovers could be key in this matchup. But, if the Hoos can keep from handing the ball over to Wake, they should come away victorious, especially if Matt Schaub plays and shows little signs of rust. Game time for the UVa-Wake contest is 3:30 PM. The game will be televised by ABC. For news, notes and other information on the game, please see the link below.
Virginia soccer upsets #4 North Carolina The men's soccer team has apparently gotten back into the swing of things. Last weekend, they knocked off #4 North Carolina at Klockner Stadium. The came on the heels of their impressive win over #3 Wake Forest the week prior. In other games this week, the Hoos defeated Mount St Mary's to move up to 7th nationally, but failed to dispose of William and Mary in an exciting overtime loss on Wednesday. The Hoos are now 4-4 on the season and will play N.C. State in Raleigh this Sunday at 2:00 PM. For more news on Virginia Soccer, please see the link below

Architects of UVa's sports facilities named Firm of the Year Charlottesville-based VMDO Architects, PC has been awarded the highest honor this year by the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects, the T. David Fitz-Gibbon Virginia Architecture Firm Award. The honor acknowledges a firm that has consistently produced distinguished architecture for a minimum of ten years. The VSAIA board selected VMDO based on a set of criteria that includes a firm's recognition for design achievement, breadth and scope of work, professional leadership, and consistency of philosophy, approach, and quality of work. VMDO Architects has provided planning, programming, and design for educational institutions for over 27 years. "While I still think we are too young to be getting lifetime achievement awards, it's nice to be recognized with this award, which is really the result of so many different people putting in long hours trying to make the most out of each project that we have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to design over the past 27 years," said Bob Moje, founding VMDO architect. "The significance of the award is that it represents not just one project, but a body of work over a period of time," added David Oakland, also a VMDO founder. UVa Architecture Professor Robert Vickery and three of his students, Moje, Oakland, and Lawson Drinkard, started VMDO in 1976. The firm evolved rapidly over the years into an established, prolific company, which today consists of eight principal architects, (Moje, Oakland, Joe Celentano, Todd Bullard, Joe Atkins, Terry Forbes, Ken Thacker and Randy Livermon), a staff of 30, and over 50 design awards. VMDO has designed a number of high-profile buildings over the course of its history, in total over 1000 designs. Those include such recent projects as the University of Virginia's Carl Smith Center/Scott Stadium expansion, the highly praised renovation and expansion of UVa's Davenport baseball field, UVa's Klockner soccer stadium, the new Washington and Lee University Student Commons, and the multiple award-winning Manassas Park High School. The students at Manassas Park High School saw their SOL scores jump dramatically after they moved into the new building, which speaks to the dynamic link between architecture and education. The firm has also provided a range of architectural services for several Charlottesville and Albemarle public schools, as well as numerous state educational institutions. Another highly visible project currently under construction is UVa's new 15,000-seat John Paul Jones basketball arena. Serving as lead architects for the arena project, VMDO is helping to set the stage for a new era in not only the university's basketball program, but also in maintaining and growing the school as one of the world's leading institutions of higher education. VMDO is also working on a variety of other projects, including the firm's first PPEA commission, which calls for a $32 million upgrade of Daniel Morgan Middle School in Winchester, VA as well as the addition and total renovation of John Handley High School. The company recently established a full-service landscape architecture studio headed up by Pete O'Shea, which is currently involved in the site design for UVa's new basketball arena, including the creation of a series of new storm water gardens, a major new entry plaza, and day-lighting a portion of Meadow Creek. Another highly anticipated design created by members of the studio is the Free Speech Monument, which will be showcased on Charlottesville's downtown mall. The landscape studio is also working with other architects on projects as far ranging as urban design plans in Barcelona, Spain, a new learning center at the University of Rhode Island, and a Boys and Girls Club in Pittsburgh, PA. Above all, VMDO was bestowed with the Fitz-Gibbon Award because they seek to design facilities that provide more than just functional spaces; they strive to create places that are suited to the needs of the community, stimulate the imagination, and enrich the regional and cultural setting. VMDO is located centrally on Charlottesville's downtown mall in the former YMCA building.
