This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Chris Gorham, the talented corner prospect from Pottstown HS (PA), will visit Virginia next weekend for an official visit. He will go to Notre Dame this weekend, UVA next weekend, and then Georgia Tech the following weekend. Those are his three favorite schools and only scheduled official visits. Spring Valley HS (SC) offensive lineman Leon Hart has added Virginia Tech and Georgia to his previous list of Florida, South Carolina, Penn State, Auburn, Virginia, Clemson, and Ohio State. Hart will narrow his list to five by Thanksgiving. UVA is resurfacing with Eastern Regional (Voorhees, NJ) offensive lineman Phil Trautwein. Trautwein, who is 6-7, 300 pounds, likes Iowa, Michigan State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Rutgers, and South Carolina. He has official visits scheduled to Iowa (12/12/03) and Michigan State (09/26/03). Keeping with the offensive line prospects, McDowell HS (Erie, PA) offensive lineman Kyle Mitchum will visit Iowa this weekend. The Hawkeyes join Ohio State, Tennessee, Miami (FL), Wisconsin, Virginia, Michigan, and UNC in Mitchum's top eight list. He hopes to narrow to five soon. No other officials have been scheduled. Matt Stoltz (Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Ark) has dropped Arkansas from his list due to a bad unofficial visit. Stoltz now lists Virginia, Tennessee, LSU, and Nebraska as his top four. One of the top linebackers in the Midwest, he has received offers from all of his favorites. Local product Devonta Brown is playing the recruiting waiting game. The 6-3, 235 pound linebacker from Charlottesville HS has only one offer, Virginia, but is receiving interest from Clemson and UNC among others. Don't expect Brown to wait too long for more offers. Be sure to check out the newly added video clips of Ahmad Bradshaw. Bradshaw shows his skill as a running back and wide receiver, though he is projected to play cornerback on the next level. In basketball news. The Cavs are in good shape for 6-9, 205 pound PF Cornelio Guibunda. Guibunda visited UVA last weekend and "loved it" according to guardian and King Low-Heywood Thomas School (CT) coach Ervin Braun. Guibunda will visit Miami (FL) this weekend and trip to Georgetown later this month.

News, Rumors and Fan Discussion | ||||||||||||||
Hagans delivers in win over Western Michigan Coach Al Groh decided to start all-everything talent Marques Hagans over freshman Anthony Martinez at quarterback this past Saturday against Western Michigan. The move proved to be an excellent decision, as Hagans led the team to an easy 59-16 victory over the Broncos in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Hagans completed 12 of his 20 passes for 162 yards with three touchdowns. He also kept the Broncos' defense off balance with his feet, rushing for 68 yards on nine carries. A lot of Cavaliers got into the scoring column this game, including two freshmen. True freshman receiver Deyon Williams saw his first action of the season. On his very first play from scrimmage, Williams caught a 35-yard pass for a touchdown. Redshirt freshman cornerback Tony Franklin provided icing on the cake with his 45-yard interception return for a touchdown with just over three minutes remaining. Overall it was a good day for the Cavaliers on both sides of the ball, especially on the defensive end. After a poor effort at South Carolina the week prior, the Hoos really needed to step up it up against Western Michigan, a team that had put up 1,050 yards in their last two contests. Against the Wahoo defense, the Broncos put up just 91 yards on the ground and were stifled through the air for a majority of the contest. More than 200 of the Bronco's 317 yards in the air were picked up in the fourth quarter, when the game was well out of reach. The Cavalier defense also sacked the Broncos' quarterback three times and caused a number of hurries, interceptions and fumbles. Virginia forced six turnovers on the day, converting most of them into touchdowns. Two interceptions were run back for scores - one by Franklin as mentioned above and another by senior defensive leader and cornerback Almondo Curry on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. For details, news and stats on the game, please see the link below.
Brick Ferguson named OL of the Week Sophomore offensive lineman D'Brickashaw Ferguson was named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week for his efforts against Western Michigan. He graded out at 94 percent while playing opposite of Jason Babin (second nationally last season with 15 sacks). Ferguson and the rest of the offensive line gave up no sacks on the day. Wahoos enjoy an off-week prior to game against Wake Virginia football will have a little extra time to prepare for their conference matchup with Wake Forest on September 27th. The Hoos get to enjoy an off-week, which should help prepare back-up QB Marques Hagans to run a bit more of UVa's offense. But there's a chance that Wahoo fans may get to see the return of Heisman hopeful quarterback Matt Schaub this game. Schaub was seen throwing some short passes in warm-ups for the Western Michigan game last weekend. Rumors are floating around that Schaub may be prepared to play against Wake. My take is that even if Schaub is ready, Coach Groh will not use him for the entire game. I expect that if Schaub plays, UVa will still use Hagans for a few series to give him some rest. The extra week benefits UVa in other ways as well. While UVa is getting two weeks to prepare for Wake, the Demon Deacs have to focus all of their attention on East Carolina this weekend. Wake is looking to get back on a winning track after falling to Purdue last weekend, 16-10. East Carolina has had a tough ride thus far this season, losing to Cincinnati (40-3), West Virginia (48-7) and Miami (38-3). Game time for the UVa-Wake contest is 3:30 PM. The game will be televised by ABC. For news, notes and other information on the game, please see the link below.
UVa men's soccer starts conference season off with a bang Virginia men's soccer picked up an important win this past weekend. They defeated 3rd-ranked Wake Forest, 2-1. The men's team recorded another win this week as well, a 1-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary's. The wins put UVa back in polls at #17. They will face #4 North Carolina at Klockner Stadium this Sunday at 2:00 PM. This game had to be rescheduled due to Hurricane Isabel.
