We are very excited to introduce TheSabre's newest sponsor...

Crown Automotive of Virginia has four dealerships in the state located in Richmond, Midlothian and Charlottesville: Richmond BMW, Crown Acura of Richmond, Richmond BMW of Midlothian and BMW of Charlottesville. Crown Auto is excited to be a major supporter of TheSabre community for 2003/04, and to prove it they are going to give fans of TheSabre the chance to drive away with the choice of a brand new Acura TL or BMW Z4!

Here is how it works:

  • Each week on TheSabre.com, there will be one trivia question related to UVA sports and one related to BMW/Acura. Each week's game starts on Monday and ends on Sunday. You can register and play every week until January 1, 2004 (permanent links to the game are located on TheSabre Home page, Crown Auto's Home Page and/or banner advertisements periodically served on every page of TheSabre.com.
  • After answering the weekly trivia questions, you will be prompted for contact info.
  • A weekly prizewinner will be randomly chosen for that week's question (note that simply by playing, you're entered into the drawing -- you don't even have to get the questions right). The weekly prizes are pretty nice -- this week's prize is a $100 gift certificate at any/all Crutchfield retail location!
  • Each week's participants will receive one (1) grand prize sweepstakes entry for every weekly game played (again, note that you don't have to answer the trivia questions right -- you just have to PLAY, and you're entered into the grand prize sweepstakes).
  • From all of the grand prize entries, accumulated from now until January 1, a grand prizewinner will be selected. The grand prize drawing will be held on January 9, 2004.
  • The one lucky grand-prize winner will drive away with their choice of an Acura TL or BMW Z4 (this is a two-year lease on the car).
Click here to go to the Crown Auto home page and play this week's game (see link for sweepstakes at the bottom of the page).

And don't forget, if you're in the market for a luxury automobile (new or used), be sure to check out Crown Automotive of Virginia, proud supporter of TheSabre.com.

Good luck!

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Jerod Mayo remains open, but said he will definitely take an official visit to both Virginia and Virginia Tech. He recently received an offer from Tennessee, who looks to be a strong contender for him as well. Kecoughtan will need a top performance from Mayo this week, as they hope to defeat defending state champ Phoebus.

Butler (NC) safety Jamar Adams returned from an official visit to Michigan without giving a verbal commitment. Adams, who is one of the top safety prospects on the east coast, is currently deciding on which other schools he will visit. Virginia, who has extended a written offer, is still in the mix.

Simeon (Chicago, IL) wide receiver Bryant Creamer will take an official visit to Virginia on the weekend of November 29th. Illinois will receive an official from Bryant the following week. At 6-3, 205 pounds, Creamer is a big receiver with great leaping ability (40" vertical), good speed (4.55 40), and an excellent work ethic. Virginia has verbally offered.

One of the top defensive end prospects in New Jersey is Plainfield's Dan Davis, and it looks like he will take an official visit to Virginia as well. Rutgers, Virginia, Georgia, Nebraska, and Maryland are his top five schools. Davis wants to make all of his official visits before making a decision.

UVA is in the top two for Northern Durham HS (Durham, NC) linebacker Chase Bullock. Bullock, who has received offers from Virginia, Wake Forest, Maryland, Duke, and Marshall, lists UVA and Wake as his leaders. He will take an unofficial visit Virginia on September 27th, when they take on Wake Forest. The Cavaliers and Demon Deacons will both receive official visits.

I hope to release video on Ahmad Bradshaw, the Graham High School (Bluefield, VA) standout, soon. Bradshaw, who has received offers from Virginia and Virginia Tech, can play cornerback, running back, or wide receiver in college. He will take an official visit to Virginia on November 29th.

In basketball recruiting news, Coach Gillen and company appear to be players in the Emanuel Willis recruitment. According to Hargrave Head Coach Kevin Keatts, the Cavaliers are very interested in the 6-7 ½, 215 pound power forward prospect. Willis signed with Southern Mississippi as a senior last season, but is currently wide open.

Virginia drops game at South Carolina

The Cavaliers lost a tough game to South Carolina this past Saturday, 31-7. The Hoos had difficulty moving the ball on offense with freshman quarterback Anthony Martinez, but that's not the only thing the Hoos had going against them. Offensive line blocking was poor, and Virginia's defense gave up a 99-yard pass play in the second quarter to put them behind 10-7. Late in the third quarter and throughout the fourth quarter, UVa defense simply could not stop USC's rushing attack. Perhaps a lot of the blame can be placed on the offense for not getting the job done, but UVa defenders were missing a ton of tackles in Carolina's backfield throughout the game. Groh and the rest of the team took as much responsibility for the loss as Martinez. Look for a better effort from all parties this weekend in Kalamazoo.

Virginia Football traveling to Kalamazoo

The Cavalier football team hopes to get back on the right track this weekend when they face Western Michigan at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo, MI. Western Michigan is coming off an impressive 56-24 win over William and Mary in which the Broncos racked up 638 yards of total offense. The Hoos will have to play especially well on defense, since they will not have the services of starting quarterback Matt Schaub on offense.

Please see our Western Michigan Game News page for information on the game, such as articles, weather reports, radio info, stats and game notes.

Who's the quarterback this week?

Martinez or Hagans? That's the question this week and it's doubtful that Coach Al Groh will let on to anyone which guy will get the most playing time this Saturday. There's a good chance UVa will use both quarterbacks at different times of the game. This should help take some of the pressure off of freshman Anthony Martinez, who's looking to drastically improve over his performance at South Carolina last week. UVa will need Martinez to settle down and make good decisions if he's to help lead the Hoos to victory. But the Hoos have a few other areas that need to be addressed this Saturday as well. The defense must play better than they did at South Carolina, and if the offensive line doesn't hold their blocks, it won't really matter who's back there.

This writer expects the Hoos to start Martinez, but use Hagans in various roles throughout the game. Expect Hagans to see a couple of series, especially when the Hoos are in the red zone.

Soccer picks up first win of the season, but also falls to UCLA

The Cavaliers had to travel out of state for their first win of the season. They defeated American last Friday, 1-0 in the Maryland Soccer Classic. On Sunday, the Hoos didn't fare so well when they were pounded 4-0 by the top-ranked UCLA Bruins.

The Hoos will play at home this Saturday at Klockner Stadium. Game time is 7:30 PM.
