Recruiting News | ||||||
This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne The big news over the last week and a half was the commitment of Loyola HS (Los Angeles, CA) quarterback Scott Deke. The 6-2, 200 pound Deke (pronounce Day-key), impressed UVA coaches during the summer camp in late June. He received an immediate offer and committed shortly thereafter. Deke plays for one of the biggest high schools in California. A 4.0 student, he hopes to enter into the Medical field at UVA. Check out his comments on his commitment to UVA (his number one school) on Sabre Edge. Jon Kirchner committed last week to Coach Groh and company. Kirchner, a 6-5, 260 pound defensive line prospect from Rockbridge High School in Rockbridge, Virginia, chose the Cavaliers over Virginia Tech, Stanford, Maryland, West Virginia, and Duke. He received scholarship offers from all of those schools. Kirchner will play defensive end in the 3-4 defense. He comments on his commitment in an article on Sabre Edge. Defensive backs were the subject of many updates this week. Edge updates were posted on Don Bosco Prep's (NJ) Marquise Liverpool, Norwich Free Academy (CT) safety James (JJ) Justice, and Northern Vance (NC) corner Paul Crews. Crews listed the Cavs among his top two schools while Liverpool and Justice appear more wide open. Justice, who wants to play in the South, has not received an offer from Virginia. Liverpool has received an offer, while Crews has not received an official offer. Roman Catholic (PA) linebacker Charron Fisher lists the Cavs at the top of his favorites. The dual-sport star is thinking about choosing basketball, however, but has not made a final decision. He has received four offers for football, including one from Virginia. The Cavaliers offered in-state standout Zak Stair of Osbourn Park HS (Manassas, VA). Stair now has received offers from three schools following his summer camp visits. 6-6, 290 pound Matawan (NJ) defensive tackle Carl Howard, who the Cavaliers have been recruiting since his sophomore season, has received a verbal offer from Virginia. He likes the ACC and has received 12 official offers.

This week ...
Chris Rotelli named ACC Male Athlete of the Year University of Virginia lacrosse player Chris Rotelli has been selected as the recipient of the Anthony J. McKevlin Award as the Atlantic Coast Conference's 2002-03 male athlete of the year, as voted on by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. The award is named for the longtime sports editor of The (Raleigh) News & Observer newspaper. Rotelli is the first men's lacrosse player ever named the conference's top athlete. He is also the first Cavalier to receive the award since basketball player Ralph Sampson was named the league's top athlete 20 years ago. Clemson's Kris Benson (1996) was the last non-basketball or football player to win the award before this season. Rotelli received 16 votes, four more than Wake Forest basketball player Josh Howard and six more than Clemson golfer D.J. Trahan. Rounding out the voting for the McKevlin Award was N.C. State baseball player Colt Morton (2), and Georgia Tech golfer Troy Matteson and North Carolina baseball player Jeremy Cleveland with one vote apiece. Rotelli, a Rumford, R.I., native turned in one of the best seasons ever by a Virginia lacrosse player in leading the Cavaliers to the national championship. He was the winner of the Tewaaraton Trophy, presented annually to the top player in the nation as well as being named USILA Midfielder of the Year. He was a first-team All-American this season and was selected the ACC Player of the Year, as well as being on the All-ACC squad for the third year in a row. In postseason tournament play, Rotelli was named to the All-NCAA Championships team and the ACC All-Tournament team as UVa won both titles. He led the team in scoring this past season with 49 points, the first midfielder to lead the team in 37 years. He scored 26 goals and added 23 assists-both figures are school records for a midfielder-to become the first "20-20" middie in school history. Other Cavaliers to win the ACC Athlete of the Year Award include football player Frank Quayle (1968) and basketball player Barry Parkhill (1972). Duke basketball player Alana Beard was selected as the Mary Garber Award winner as the ACC's Female Athlete of the Year. Virginia Football picked to finish fourth in ACC According to media representatives at this year's ACC Football Kickoff in Greensboro, Georgia (yes, Georgia, that's not a typo), the Cavaliers are predicted to finish fourth in the conference. Virginia received a total of 570 points and had five first place votes. The Cavaliers were picked to finish seventh last season and surprised everyone by finishing second with a 6-2 conference record (9-3 overall). Here's the breakdown of how the voting went with first place votes in parenthesis and total points to the far right.
