UVa basketball gets point guard commitment
By Chris Horne

Virginia has received its first commitment for the 2004-2005 basketball recruiting class. Jeff White of the Richmond Times Dispatch is reporting that William Penn Charter 5-11, 170 pound point guard Sean Singletary has committed to the Cavaliers.

Singletary is a true point guard who possesses great vision, good ball-handling ability, and good decision making skills. He also possesses a nice shooting stroke and is a threat from behind the arc.

As a junior, he averaged 18.6 points per game, earning Philadelphia Daily News first-team All-City honors. Singletary has been rated the #2 point guard in the 2004-2005 class by Rivals.com's Mike Sullivan, and is rated the #11 player overall.

Singletary chose Virginia over offers from Kansas, Rutgers, Indiana, and NC State among others. He has already qualified with a 3.5 grade point average and a 1,010 SAT score.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

This week, UVA made the cut for Moon Area (Coraopolis, PA) standout defensive tackle AQ Shipley. The Cavs, who were mentioned by Shipley as being the team who has recruited him the heaviest, are in his list of eight favorite schools. He plans on taking unofficial visits to his favorites this summer, and hopes to narrow his list even more by the end of July.

Virginia is also in the top three for Deptford (NJ) linebacker/fullback Michael Green. Green is listing the Cavs along with Ohio State and Illinois as his favorites.

Four in-state prospects announced their intentions to camp at UVA. Indian River running back Brandon Ore, Franklin County cornerback Patrick Preston, Hopewell quarterback Lee Bujakowski, and Salem (Salem, VA) linebacker Austin Casey all plan on attending one day camps at UVA. The Cavs appear to want to make a decision on which quarterback they will offer during their one day camps. Westfield's Sean Glennon will be participating as well.

Brandon Ore has been one of the surprise prospects of the spring evaluation period. He has received official offers from Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Maryland, and Penn State. At 6-2, 195 pounds, he runs a 4.4 in the 40 and will likely receive many more offers in the fall. He is wide open at this time.

One of the nation's top prospect has the Cavaliers in his top three. According to Lutheran (Orange, CA) head coach Jim Kunau, WR/LB Anthony Vernaglia is "seriously considering" Virginia, and has them in his top three with Southern California and Penn State. UCLA and Notre Dame also figure to be in the mix. UVA likes Vernaglia, who is 6-4, 220 pounds, as a wide receiver.

Rockbridge defensive lineman Jon Kirchner added three more offers at the end of last week through the beginning of this week. Maryland, Virginia Tech, and Duke all stepped forward with offers. Kirchner would like to decide in July between Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Chris Rotelli wins highest honor
UVa Media Relations Report

Virginia midfielder Chris Rotelli was named the winner of the 2003 Tewaaraton Trophy, symbolic of being named the top men's lacrosse player in the nation this season.

A senior from Rumford, R.I., Rotelli put together one of the best seasons ever by a Cavalier middie and played a key role in leading the team to the national championship. A complete midfielder of the old school variety, he consistently made his presence felt on both ends of the field this spring with his tenacious defense and variety of offensive skills.

New name for Sabre Edge recruiting message board

We've changed the name of the Sabre Edge Recruiting message board to the Edge Subscription message board. This board can be used for any UVa sports-related discussions, not just recruiting talk. So, if you're "tired of the riff raff," (your words, not ours) or just cannot stand to weed through all of the Hokie-related posts on TheSabre.com's free message boards, bring your conversations on over to the Sabre Edge Subscriber message board. Chris Horne has been providing a lot of recruiting information on that board as well, so come on over! Of course, you must be a Sabre Edge subscriber to participate.

New Terms of Service with Netiquette

We've added a new Terms of Service page for our message boards. Most of the information is the same, but please read these over and make sure you are complying with the rules of the message boards when you post. We've also added a helpful 'Netiquette' listing to help those who are new to the message board posting process.
