This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

UVA ended the week with a bang, getting a verbal commitment from 5-10, 195 pound William Campbell running back Cedric Peerman. Peerman becomes the second verbal commitment of the 2004 class, joining St. Anne's Belfield defensive tackle Chris Long. Both prospects are ranked in the top 10 overall in the state of Virginia, giving the Cavaliers a great start in in-state recruiting.

As a junior, Peerman rushed for 2,048 yards. He scored 50 total touchdowns. Peerman has the breakaway speed needed for Division I running backs and also possesses great hands, which are necessary to be a running back in Al Groh's system.

Following last week's Nike Camp, Virginia received a visit from one of the top quarterbacks in North Carolina, Charlotte Olympic's Antonio Miller. Olympic head coach Maurice Flowers indicated an official offer has not been extended, however he expects the Cavaliers to offer in the near future. Miller, who is 6-1, 190 pounds, runs extremely well but is an accomplished passer. He favors Kansas State, Marshall, and Virginia according to coach Flowers. UVa is recruiting Miller as a quarterback.

Spring Valley (SC) defensive end Mack Frost indicated his plans to attend UVa's summer camp. Frost, who is one of the top defensive ends on the East coast, is an awesome pass rusher with great speed and quickness. UVa has not offered but is extremely interested. The defensive line appears to be a need area for the Cavs, and Frost is one of the best. He has received offers from UNC, South Carolina, Maryland, and Clemson, to name a few.

An in-state defensive end stated that the Cavaliers have made it into his top two schools. Rockbridge's (VA) Jon Kirchner, previously thought to be a Virginia Tech lock, made several positive comments in the Cavaliers' favor. While Tech is still strong at the top, UVa is now "neck and neck" according to Kirchner. He has received offers from UVa, West Virginia, and Stanford.

This week featured a summary of the Blacksburg Nike Camp as well as updates on top targets AQ Shipley (Moon Area DT), Butler (PA) linebacker Tyrell Sales, Forest Hills (NC) defensive tackle Marque Hall, and in-state standout linebacker Andrew Bowman of Hermitage High School.

This week ...

Men's lacrosse dominated Georgetown, advances in tourney

The Virginia men's lacrosse team advanced to the Final Four last weekend by soundly defeating Georgetown, 12-7. Sophomore attackman John Christmas had a field day on the Hoyas, scoring three goals in the contest. Goalie Tillman Johnson did his part, holding the Hoyas off for 22 minutes without a goal during one stretch of the game.

The win tied the school record with 13 wins in a season. This is the best season for UVa lacrosse since their National Championship run in 1999.

Up next for the Hoos is a Final Four weekend matchup with conference foe Maryland. The Cavaliers will be looking for a little payback in this contest. One of their two losses this year came to Maryland during the regular season, a heartbreaking 8-7 loss at home. That was the last loss for the Cavaliers this year - they've won eight straight since.

Game time for UVa-Maryland is approximate. The Hoos will play 45 minutes after the end of the Syracuse-John's Hopkins contest that begins at 11:30 AM. The contests will be televised by ESPN2 and played at Ravens Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland.

For more information on the lacrosse team, please see UVa Lacrosse.

Women's lacrosse team defeats Maryland, loses to Princeton in final

The women's lacrosse team gave it their best effort, but just fell short of winning the National Title when they lost a heartbreaking overtime contest to Princeton, 8-7 last weekend. Lauren Aumiller contributed four assists, while Cary Chasney scored a hat trick to lead UVa offensively.

UVa baseball wins series vs. Carolina, falls in ACC Tourney

Heading into the ACC Tournament this week, the UVa baseball team went on the road and took two of three games from North Carolina. The Cavaliers won the first contest, 6-4, breaking a five game losing streak on the season. UNC bounced back to beat the Cavaliers in the second game, 4-3. UVa took the third game, 7-5, clinching the series.

Virginia lost to N.C. State yesterday in the first round of the ACC Tournament, 10-6. The Wolfpack took an early 3-0 lead and never looked back. Virginia will now face Wake Forest today at 1:00 PM.

New name for Sabre Edge recruiting message board

We've changed the name of the Sabre Edge Recruiting message board to the Edge Subscription message board. This board can be used for any UVa sports-related discussions, not just recruiting talk. So, if you're "tired of the riff raff," (your words, not ours) or just cannot stand to weed through all of the Hokie-related posts on TheSabre.com's free message boards, bring your conversations on over to the Sabre Edge Subscriber message board. Chris Horne has been providing a lot of recruiting information on that board as well, so come on over! Of course, you must be a Sabre Edge subscriber to participate.

New Terms of Service with Netiquette

We've added a new Terms of Service page for our message boards. Most of the information is the same, but please read these over and make sure you are complying with the rules of the message boards when you post. We've also added a helpful 'Netiquette' listing to help those who are new to the message board posting process.
