Southern Invitational Tournament this weekend

The annual Southern Invitational Tournament is in Charlottesville this weekend. This marquee tournament brings in the region's top high school basketball talent right to UVa's backyard, U-Hall! Southern Invitational Tournament Dates are May 9-11. There will be 96 teams from the east coast: 48 17-year-old players, 24 16-year-old players, and 24 15-year-old players will be present.

Past participants include UVa recruits include JR Reynolds, Jason Clark, and Elton Brown. Last year 90% of the top 50 players in the east played in the tournament, including Loul Deng (the third ranked player in the country), a Duke recruit who chose Duke over UVa.

The SIT is sponsored locally by the Charlottesville Albemarle Youth Club. CAYC is a 501 C3 organization dedicated to helping the youth of Central Virginia. By sponsoring the tournament, local players have the chance to participate in the type of tournament usually unavailable to them. Bob Gibbons, one of the nations leading recruiting gurus, is the organizer of the tournament, along with the Hoop Group, a basketball powerhouse from the NJ/NY area. The association with Bob Gibbons is also helping several local players obtain opportunities they would otherwise not have.

The tournament is truly a win-win-win situation. The University of Virginia is able to have some of the best players in the country visit their facilities on an unofficial basis. The CYAC is able to provide athletic opportunities for local athletes. And lastly, the local business community benefits form the approximately 2,000 visitors the tournament brings to the area.

Games will run from 7:30-11 p.m. tomorrow, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and 8:50 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. In the past, games have been played at University Hall, The Cage and North Grounds Recreational facility. If you'd like to attend this event, please stop by University Hall to pick up your ticket and schedule book.

S.I.T. players to look for

UVa commitment Jason Cain won't be able to participate in this year's S.I.T., but there are at least four top players with interest in the Cavalier program that will be here.

Cavalier fans should keep an eye out for the following players: James Mays (North Carolina Gators), Cheyenne Moore (Richmond Squires), Sean Singletary (Tim Thomas Playaz) and Marquis Cooke (Boo Williams).

Updated recruiting database

May is 2004 Recruiting Kickoff Month at TheSabre.com, and we're pleased to launch our database of 2004 recruits and start coverage of the 2004 football recruiting prospects.

Recruiting analyst Chris Horne has generated his initial list of UVa football recruits, which can now be seen via TheSabre.com's Prospect Search page -- but don't go there yet! There's a few things you need to know first:

  • The initial TheSabre.com list of prospects for the Hoos numbers 102 players, 38 in-state and 64 out of state players.
  • No players have been assigned star ratings yet. All players are listed with their star ratings "pending."
  • The pre-summer Chris Horne Top 30 in-state recruits has been folded into the database, so you can see how highly-ranked the in-state recruits are. We have also included Roanoke Times rankings in each player's profile, for comparisons.
In the coming weeks, Chris will be interviewing the prospects in our database to introduce you to them, get their early thoughts on who their favorite schools are, and find out where they're going to football camp this summer.

Upcoming big events are the Nike camp at Virginia Tech on May 17th, followed by summer football camps throughout June and July at colleges everywhere. For many prospects, this will give them their first look at some campuses and coaching staffs, and it will give the college coaching staffs their first in-person look at the recruits. Expect a lot of activity this summer in offers and verbals, as well as colleges moving up and down players' favorites lists.

To follow Cavalier recruiting all the way through Signing Day 2004, sign up for the Sabre Edge just $34.95 a year -- that's less than $3 a month!

This week ...

Oops!

Last SabreMail I failed to mention the results of the NFL Draft. Apologies to UVa linebacker Angelo Crowell and UVa wide receiver Billy McMullen, who were both chosen in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft.

Crowell was selected 94th overall by the Buffalo Bills, while McMullen was chosen 95th by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Two other Cavaliers were picked up by NFL teams as well. Safety Jerton Evans signed as a free agent with Buffalo and linebacker Merrill Robertson signed with Philadelphia.

Former Cavaliers (RB Arlen Harris and WR James Johnson) signed with the St. Louis Rams and Washington Redskins respectively.
