Cain Set to Visit
Report by Chris Horne

Virginia will entertain 6-9, 205 pound forward Jason Cain of John Bartram High School (Philadelphia, PA) this weekend on an official visit.

"He's leaving tomorrow," said John Bartram head coach Lou Biester. "He's excited - at least as excited as Jason can get. He's also considering UNC Greensboro, Indiana, and Villanova right now."

Cain, who began his high school career as a 6-1 guard, has grown eight inches over the last three years. Possessing the size of a center, his skills are suited more for a small or very athletic power forward.

"Jason is very athletic," said Biester. "He can handle the ball and he was the team's best passer. He averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks, and eight assists in leading us to a Public League Championship title. He's not a center, though. He faces the basket. The player he reminds me of in terms of style is Arizona's Luke Walton. He can do it all - even shoot the three. Jason needs to work on his three-point shot, but he can do it."

According to Biester, neither Villanova, Indiana, or Virginia have officially offered Cain a scholarship, however he feels they all will soon. Cain is one of Virginia's primary remaining targets for the Spring 2002 signing period.

This week ...

Weekend spring football practices open to the public

UVa Media Relations has just released information stating that Coach Al Groh will be opening up three more practices for the general public. Practices will be open this Friday (2:30), Saturday (10:45) and Sunday (2:30). If you plan to attend, please be sure to get your field access pass from the 2nd floor of the McCue Center (UVa Football reception desk). Practices are held on the fields just behind University Hall.

Spring Football Festival still on

Contrary to some reports, the UVa football team will indeed suit up on April 19th for the 2003 Spring Football Festival. It was reported in the media that the Hoos would likely not play a spring football game because they were lacking players at the center position.

Coach Al Groh confirmed this week in a teleconference that the 'game' would still be played, just likely not as a full on 11-on-11 scrimmage. This should come as no surprise to Cavalier fans since they haven't seen an 11-on-11 game in several years. Coach Groh commented that while this wouldn't be an actual football game, it will have players lined up and playing against each other competitively, much like the last two springs.

This year's spring football festival will be held at Scott Stadium on April 19th at 11:00 AM. The 'game' begins at 12:30 PM.

Virginia baseball turning heads

The Cavalier baseball team is on a roll this year. Currently, they hold a 16-game home winning streak. Recently, they knocked off #20 Clemson on the road. The Hoos are 20-10 on the season and have won 11 of their last 13 games.

The Hoos will test their skills this weekend when they face #12 Miami at home. The three-game series begins today, Friday April 11th and extends through Sunday. Game times are as follows: Friday at 7:00PM, Saturday at 6:00PM and Sunday at 1:00PM.

UVa lacrosse back to winning ways

The Cavalier lacrosse team pulled out of their two-game funk last weekend by defeating North Carolina, 10-7. Goalie Tillman Johnson earned ACC Lacrosse Player of the Week honors with an outstanding effort against the Tar Heels. Johnson recorded 14 saves and allowed just two goals in the final 30 minutes of the game.

Up next for the Hoos will be an away contest with Duke in Durham, NC. The game is scheduled for 2:30PM this Saturday. With a win over Duke, the Cavaliers would extend their record to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference heading into ACC Tournament play.

The ACC Lacrosse Tournament is being held at Klockner Stadium next week. Semifinals begin Friday April 18th, with the Championship game being played on Sunday at 3:30PM. Comcast Sports will be televising the final game. Semifinal games on Friday will be at 6:00PM and 8:30PM.
