Cavs looking at Minter, Cain
Report by Chris Horne

With the graduation of Travis Watson following this year, the Cavaliers will need to add depth to the power forward and center positions for next year. Coach Gillen and company did not land a big man in the fall 2002 signing period, and are looking at a few prospects in Spring 2003.

Donte Minter, a 6-8, 240 pound power forward from Fork Union Military Academy, tops the list of candidates. Minter, who is being recruited by the Cavaliers but has not yet received a scholarship offer, is a good scorer and natural rebounder, according to FUMA assistant Brooks Berry.

"He has those natural instincts in the way he rebounds," said Berry. "He almost always has perfect timing when getting the rebounds. Donte can also score - he's averaged about 25 points per game, or something in that range, for us this year. He has a nice touch."

Minter came to Fork Union after not meeting NCAA eligibility standards out of high school. He originally signed with Appalachian State.

"He signed with Appalachian State but didn't get his test scores," said Fork Union head coach Fletcher Arritt. "He made his scores pretty easily once he got here, and has turned into a very good prospect. He is a true 6-8, 240 pound high post/low post player. Right now, he is being recruited by Appalachian State, Ohio State, Charlotte, Virginia Tech, and Virginia."

Minter will begin taking his official visits following the end of Fork Union's season in March. Coach Arritt said Minter is "definitely interested in Virginia" and should get offers once he takes official visits.

John Bartam High forward Jason Cain, who was supposed to visit UVa unofficially last weekend, may not have made the trip, according to Bartram head coach Lou Biester.

"I haven't spoken to him this week because we have been closed due to snow, but I don't think he made it to Virginia last weekend," said Biester.

Cain, who goes 6-9, 200 pounds, was a guard his sophomore season and has grown nine inches over the past three years. The growth spurt has not hurt his athletic ability, which is one of his strengths.

"Jason is an outstanding athlete," said Biester. "He is a face-up player who runs the court exceptionally well. He beats guards to loose balls. The only knock on him is that he is not powerful. Once he gets into college, he will be able to get stronger and more powerful and maintain his athleticism."

UVa has not offered Cain, but the Cavaliers have been in contact with the talented forward throughout the past few months. Other schools looking closely at Cain are Villanova, Seton Hall, Penn State, Indiana, Utah, and UNC-Greensboro.

"He will not concentrate on where he is going to school until our season is over," said Biester. "He said that early and has maintained his attitude. Jason is a really polite kid, and wants to concentrate on basketball first."

Another prospect the Cavaliers are really interested in is Linas Kleiza of Montrose Christian (MD). Kleiza, who is a 6-9 power forward with very good skills, is leaning towards Missouri. More information will come on UVa's Spring prospects following the end of high school basketball seasons.

This week ...

Football 101 for women

Charlottesville, VA- "Football 101 for Women" returns to Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium on Saturday, April 5, 2003.

Anne Groh, wife of Virginia football head coach Al Groh, will be hosting the event along with Margaret Littlepage, wife of Virginia's Director of Athletics Craig Littlepage.

"We want all women in our community to be able to enjoy the success of the University of Virginia football program," Anne Groh explained, hoping to build upon the success of last year's program. "Understanding the basics of football undoubtedly will increase enthusiasm for the game."

For $30.00, women of all ages will have the opportunity to learn more about offense, defense, penalties and official's signals, as well as how football affects the lives of coaches and players on and off of the field.

"Football 101 for Women" will begin at 10 a.m. in the Alumni Room (second floor) of Bryant Hall at the south end of Scott Stadium and will run until 3 pm. Lunch will be provided.

Interested parties can make reservations at [email protected] or call Amy Potter at 434.982.4987.

Hoos lose to Duke and Clemson

The Hoos lost to Duke last Saturday, 78-59, and to Clemson Tuesday, 73-64. That's two straight losses for the Cavaliers in University Hall, a place that the Hoos seldom lose. That's three straight losses overall for the Cavaliers (they lost to UNC on Feb. 12th). This is the second time this season the Hoos have dropped three games in a row.

The slide comes at a bad time, when UVa is trying to ensure its place in this year's NCAA Tournament. With home losses to Duke and Clemson, the Cavaliers have put themselves in must-win situations for all remaining games with Wake Forest (road), Ohio (home), Florida State (road), Georgia Tech (home) and Maryland (home).

If UVa can win out, their record will stand at 19-10 and 9-7 in the ACC. That should be enough to get an invite to the Big Dance. Of course, UVa has a lot of work to do and the inconsistency of late does not bring Cavalier fans much hope.

Up next? Wake and Ohio

Virginia travels to Winston-Salem this Sunday for a game against Wake Forest. The Hoos defeated Wake at home on January 23rd, 85-75. The game is scheduled for 6:30 PM and will be televised by the Fox Sports Network.

Virginia will continue on the road next Wednesday when they face out of conference opponent Ohio in Athens. This game is scheduled for 7:00 PM and will not be televised.
