This week in Virginia recruiting

Dias down to two

Jermaine Dias, a 6-2, 215-pound linebacker from Hackensack, NJ, has narrowed his list to two schools, Virginia and North Carolina. Hackensack H.S. Head Coach Ralph Dass believes that Dias is close to making his decision, and that decision could come as early as this weekend, if it hasn't happened already. Dass believes UVa has led for Dias' services for quite a while, however, he still remains uncommitted.

Anastasio still in the mix

Robinson (VA) athlete Chase Anastasio still has three teams he's choosing from, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Notre Dame. Following an impressive visit last weekend, Virginia Tech has become a very strong player in Anastasio's recruitment. Virginia is still in the mix, however, along with the Fighting Irish.

Some suspect that Anastasio was turned off by the departure of UVa Offensive Coordinator Bill Musgrave. Musgrave took a job last week with the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to Chase's father, Mike Anastasio, Musgrave's departure will have no effect on Chase's decision.

"We talked about that quite a bit," said Mr. Anastasio. "Unfortunately, in this business, coaches come and go. We told Coach Groh that our decision is based on the head coach, not the assistant coaches. It won't be a factor. In the end, though, the decision will come down to where Chase is comfortable. He has to be comfortable at the school he chooses for more than just football reasons. Things change in football."

The in-home visits end for Chase tonight, and then he and his family will sit down and sort things out. Look for a decision to come by this Monday.

More on Ellis

Believe it or not, Virginia is still in the mix with Bethel H.S. defensive end Chris Ellis. Ellis, 6-5, 230 pounds, may very well end up at Virginia Tech when all is said and done. But the Cavaliers are still right there, and the longer that Ellis waits to make his decision, the better it is for UVa.

Ellis enjoyed his trip to Blacksburg last weekend, but not enough to pull the trigger with a commitment, which means that he's still keeping the door open. In past conversations, Ellis has expressed a concern with UVa's 3-4 defense. Since many of the top NFL teams are now using the 3-4, it is doubtful that Ellis' decision, if he chooses Virginia Tech, will come down to defensive scheme.

Another Jersey defensive player?

What could be better than the Hoos getting a commitment from superstar linebacker Jermaine Dias? Well, how about a commitment from Woodrow Wilson (NJ) linebacker/defensive end Turk McBride? McBride visited the Hoos last weekend and came away impressed, and is one of Virginia top remaining targets.

McBride has strong interest in three schools, but is keeping his options open.

"Virginia, Florida, and Tennessee are the main ones I'm looking at, but I'm still considering NC State and Ohio State," said Turk McBride. "If I had to pick a date right now that I will decide by, it would be signing day. But I may decide a few days earlier, I really don't know."

This week ...

Cavalier Hoops defeat Wake and FSU

The Cavaliers put on a show last Thursday when they ran over 17th-ranked Wake Forest, 85-75. Majestic Mapp directed the team while Todd Billet put in most of the points (23). Devin Smith had a sparkling game as well, chipping in 17 points. Travis Watson had a double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds).

Virginia evened their conference record at 3-3 Wednesday night when they defeated Florida State, 85-72. Travis Watson battled through the tough defense of Florida State, scoring 20 points and ripping down an amazing 16 rebounds. Yet another double-double for Watson.

For post game stats and articles on these games, please refer to our basketball schedule.

A Majestic return!

Majestic Mapp gave fans a glimpse of his talents last week when he led the Cavaliers to a win over Wake Forest. Mapp played 17 total minutes, the most since his freshmen year. He finished the game with four assists to just one turnover, but his presence and leadership on the court is what mattered most. The Hoos just looked like they knew what they were doing while Mapp was on the floor.

Virginia will certainly need Mapp's services down the stretch. They have two tough road contests to contend with over the next week. This Saturday, the Hoos travel to Georgia Tech. Next Thursday, they travel to hostile territory when they face 9th-ranked Maryland in College Park. Game time for GT is 4:00 p.m. and will be televised by the Raycom-Jefferson Sports Network. Game time for Maryland is 9:00 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN2.

Two UVa football players named to ACC All-Academic Team
Official UVa Media Relations release

University of Virginia football players Matt Schaub and Shernard Newby are among 33 players named to the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic football team as announced by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. To be eligible, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the fall semester or have maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

Schaub was named the ACC Player of the Year last season after guiding the Cavaliers to a 9-5 record and a #22 ranking in the final Associated Press poll. He led the conference in passing efficiency and finished sixth nationally. He set or tied at least 10 UVa single-season records, including touchdown passes (28), yards passing (2976), attempts (418), completions (288), completion percentage (68.9), total offense (3071), total plays (488), 200-yard games (8-tie), 300-yard games (3-tie), and consecutive games with a touchdown pass (14).

Newby led the team with three interceptions and finished his career tied for eighth in UVa history with 11. He made 50 tackles, the second-highest total of his career, this season to finish second among the team's safeties. His 188 career tackles are eighth all-time by a UVa defensive back.
