Recruiting Update
By Chris Horne

Brown drama

The Recruiting "Dead" period is coming to an end this week with a bang. Earlier this week, it was reported by TheSabre.com and Techsideline.com that Virginia Tech had pulled its offer to outstanding Phoebus cornerback Phillip Brown.

As it turns out, the Hokies still have an offer on the table, however, an article from the Newport News Daily Press indicates Virginia Tech has not been recruiting Brown as heavily as some of the other schools. It is unclear what may happen in this case, and only time will tell.

Other news

It's time now for most of the nation's top prospects to take some recruiting visits. This is no different for UVa targets, as several big time targets are beginning their visits this weekend. Prospects taking visits include Bethel DE Chris Ellis to Maryland, Phoebus CB Phillip Brown to Clemson, Hackensack (NJ) LB Jermaine Dias to North Carolina, Woodrow Wilson (NJ) LB Turk McBride to NC State, and Roselle (NJ) WR Jesse Holley to Ohio State.

Check out the Sabre Edge for recruiting updates on these prospects and more from the beginning of the recruiting rush.

   News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

This week ...

Cavs drop first ACC game

Virginia fell to North Carolina State in their ACC road opener yesterday, 75-63. The Cavs could not contain 'Pack guard Julius Hodge, who scored 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field. Hodge also led the 'Pack with 11 rebounds.

For Virginia, there weren't many bright spots. Travis Watson was limited to 10 points, but did grab 12 rebounds. Virginia's other leading scorers were Todd Billet with 10 and Devin Smith with a team-high 14 points.

The Cavaliers shot a miserable 18 percent from beyond the 3-point arc, and shot a less-than-stellar 40 percent from the field and 58 percent from the line.

Virginia hopes to get itself in gear by this Saturday when they host North Carolina in University Hall. This will be the first ACC contest of the year at home for the Hoos, and will likely mark the first appearance of point guard Majestic Mapp since his freshman season.

For more on yesterday's game, including post-game articles and box score, please see N.C. State Game News.

Next up?

Virginia will face two ACC opponents this week. The first of the two is against North Carolina this Saturday at noon in University Hall. The second is against Duke on January 15th at 7:00 PM in Durham. Both contests will be televised by ESPN.

For game notes and eventual post game articles and box scores for each game, please see the Basketball Schedule.

Uva's Eskandarian named college soccer's best

Virginia Soccer's Alecko Eskandarian has been named 2002 College Player of the Year by Soccer America. Eskandarian scored 113 points during his three-year career at UVa.
