Ian Yates Cunningham the best?

One of Virginia Football's primary recruiting targets this year is Ian Yates Cunningham, a 6-5, 300-pound offensive linemen from Lewisville, Texas. Many recruiting analysts had speculated early in the year that Cunningham might not worth the hype, but Dave Campbell of Texas Football isn't buying it. Texas Football recently announced that Cunningham is one of five players nominated for Class 4A Texas Player of the Year honors.

For more on Cunningham and the other finalists, please see the official report.

This week ...

SabreMail Correction

I hope Cavalier fans will forgive me for mis-typing UVa's conference record in last week's SabreMail. I mistakenly typed 5-3, yet the Hoos finished tied for second with Maryland at 6-2. In a season where most everyone thought a winning record in the ACC wasn't possible, UVa slapped the face of its doubters and succeeded on the field much sooner than anyone expected.

Credit the coaching staff for sure, but also credit the freshmen who worked hard in the off-season to make themselves ready to play. Players like Wali Lundy, Darryl Blackstock and Brick Ferguson, to name a few. These players, who all started as true freshmen, are a great part of the reason UVa salvaged what could have been a disaster season when several Hoos went down with injuries, and several others departed for various reasons before the season even began. The future is indeed bright for the Cavaliers, especially if Coach Groh and company continue to recruit these fine athletes.

Cavs drop football contest to Hokies

Weather conditions were too adverse for UVa's passing game when they dropped a 21-9 decision to Virginia Tech last Saturday. The Cavs hung with the Hokies until late in the game, but Tech's running game was too much as Lee Suggs and Kevin Jones had their way with the Hoos.

Blizzard-like conditions cost UVa any chance of having a successful passing game. Gusts of wind, mixed with swirling snow, prevented the Cavaliers from getting into gear offensively. The Cavs, led by All-ACC quarterback Matt Schaub, only mustered 43 yards through the air.

The good news came when freshman Wali Lundy racked up a career-high 127 yards on 29 carries. Lundy was about the only Cavalier that the Hokies could not stop, often busting out for gains of ten-plus yards a crack.

The loss puts the Hoos at 8-5 on the regular season. Still, a great accomplishment since most 'predictors' had the Cavs finishing 8th or 9th in the ACC and with a losing record overall. Virginia finished tied for second with Maryland, but apparently will go to either the fourth or fifth place bowl slot for ACC teams.

The way things are going, Virginia will have to finish undefeated next year in order to accept a date with the Peach Bowl. Just kidding. But with the politics of bowl committees, that appears more like reality for the Hoos. Isn't it time for a playoff? Isn't it time to give the bowls and their television revenue a swift kick in the you-know-what? Where's the NCAA in all of this? Probably just schmoozing with Notre Dame again.

To find out more on the UVA-VT game, please see Virginia Tech Game News.

Where oh where will our Cavaliers go?

That seems to be the question of the hour for Hoo fans. To what bowl will Virginia eventually be invited? The Continental Tire Bowl in Charlotte seems to be the obvious choice. Since the Peach Bowl is still in a snit over the words that were exchanged the last time they snubbed UVa, they have done it again, and UVa is now sitting in a situation where fans really need to know which bowl game so that they can make arrangements for tickets and lodging.

Every day that goes by, Virginia fans are getting the shaft because airlines are being booked for the holidays (as are hotels), and rates are gradually going up each day that passes by. If these bowls want larger turnouts, they should really think about making their decisions sooner. What's this? Oh, we're waiting on Notre Dame again. Would someone please hurry up and provide them with the death penalty so that several other teams could find out their bowl destinations? I'd really like to know what the love-fest is with Notre Dame anymore. Coach Lou Holtz hasn't been there in years, and the last time they looked like a contender was well over a decade ago.

Seriously though, if UVa accepts a bid to 'The Bowl in Charlotte' (we'll call it TBC for now), they should be pleased. Charlotte is a great place to hang out, and the Hoos will travel well to that site. It's a couple hours from Atlanta, about five hours from Charlottesville, and not too much of a hike for those in NOVA. It's a trip that can be had without airfare for most, keeping the cost down. This could be the turnout the Hoos need to convince the bowl committees of the future that UVa fans will travel. Of course, they still need to make a decision of who's going to participate. Right now, if Virginia Tech gets invited to 'TBC', then the Cavs will likely be sent out to Seattle, a great place to travel in the winter around the holidays. Surely the Hoos will take tons of fans to Seattle. Not.

Virginia basketball falls in ACC-Big Ten Challenge

The Cavaliers posted their second loss of the season last night when they were defeated by the Spartans of Michigan State, 82-75. Virginia hung tight with Michigan State until Travis Watson went to the bench with his third foul early in the contest. The Spartans used that time to go on a 17-0 run and push the score to 33-19 with just over four minutes to play in the first half.

Watson would return to action in the second half, but by then it was too late. Virginia got next to nothing in terms of productivity from its front court players, garnering just 21 points total from Watson, Elton Brown, Jason Clark and Nick Vander Laan. Picking up the slack left by the post player were transfer guards Todd Billet with 28 points and Devin Smith with a career high 22 points.

The Spartans led by 11 points at half time and extended their lead to as many as 18 in the second half before Virginia made their late game run. Still, the Spartans were too much for the Cavs, often diving on the floor for loose balls, or scrapping heavily for rebounds on the offensive glass. It was evident who wanted the game more.

Virginia will have to wait almost two weeks before they return to action in hopes of breaking their two-game skid. Their next contest is a home match up with East Tennessee State on December 17th at 7:30 p.m. at University Hall.
