Two basketball recruits sign letters of intent

Weekend Visitors
By Chris Horne

The following players will be visiting the University of Virginia this weekend for the game versus Maryland.

Vince Redd - 6-7, 250 LB - Elizabethton (Elizabethton, TN)
Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, South Carolina

Vince Redd is an outstanding athlete for his size, as he runs a 4.8 in the 40. He also plays for his high school varsity basketball team. Most schools are recruiting Vince as a defensive end because of his pass rushing skills, although UVa would like him as an outside linebacker in the Darryl Blackstock mold. Redd has no leader at this time, and may take all five visits before deciding.

Antowan Bell - 6-4, 190 WR - Overlea (Baltimore, MD)
    Virginia, Georgia, Purdue

Antowan Bell has earned offers from all three of his favorites since the beginning of his high school season. Bell had an outstanding senior year, making 57 receptions for 914 yards and ten touchdowns. He led Overlea to a 7-3 record, its best mark in almost ten years. Bell also plays small forward for the varsity basketball squad. He will be making the trip this weekend on an unofficial visit with his head coach. Bell has yet to set up any official visits and has no leader between the top three schools at this time.

Jesse Holley - 6-3, 185 WR - Abraham Clark (Roselle, NJ)
Virginia, UCLA, Notre Dame, Michigan, UNC

One of the top prospects in the country, Jesse Holley is the lone star on a 1-7 Abraham Clark squad. He has played a number of different positions this season, including quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end, linebacker, free safety and cornerback. He also returns punts and kick-offs. Holley is the type of player who loves the ball in crunch time and is a true leader. His outstanding ability has earned him scholarship offers from virtually every top school in the country, including all of his favorites. Al Golden is the lead recruiter for Holley, who would be an excellent pickup for Virginia. He has no leader at this time, but will not hesitate to make a decision if he feels a certain school is the right choice.

Allen Billyk - 6-4, 258 DE - New Castle (New Castle, PA)
    Virginia, Ohio State, Michigan, Stanford

Billyk is rising in the recruiting ranks following a solid senior season, as he has recently earned offers from Big Ten powers Michigan and Ohio State. Billyk is being recruited as a defensive end in the Braden Campbell mold. He led New Castle to 8-1 regular season record before losing in the second round of the WPIAL AAA playoffs to Moon. Billyk played along the defensive line and at tight end for New Castle. He has consistently listed Virginia in the top 3, which bodes well for the Cavaliers. This is an unofficial visit.

    Brannon Jackson - 6-2, 220 LB - Washington-Marion (Lake Charles, LA)
    LSU, Clemson, Virginia, Texas A&M

Jackson is a surprise visitor this weekend, as he has not been mentioned before as a Virginia recruit. As a junior, Jackson made 105 tackles, four sacks, and had two interceptions. According to Rivals.com, he has been offered by LSU, and it is unknown whether or not the Cavaliers have offered. This will be an unofficial trip.

Game time set for UVa-VT football game
Official UVa media release

The University of Virginia's final football game of the regular season, its annual clash with in-state rival Virginia Tech on Nov. 30 in Blacksburg, will kickoff at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN.

Virginia Football defeats N.C. State

The Cavaliers secured themselves a post-season bowl with their seventh win of the season last Saturday by knocking of nationally-ranked N.C. State. The win makes Virginia bowl eligible, and their apparent destination could be either the Peach Bowl or Gator Bowl depending on how they fare against Maryland this Saturday.

The win over N.C. State gave Virginia a clean sweep of the Carolinas. In addition to N.C. State, the Hoos have defeated North Carolina, Wake Forest, Duke, South Carolina and Clemson. This is the first time in school history that the Hoos have swept all major conference teams from both of those states in one season.

With only two games left in the season, the Cavaliers have already shocked most of the preseason predictors by securing a winning season with perhaps the youngest major college football team in the nation. What makes this even more remarkable is that the Hoos have done this with a rash of injuries, especially on the offensive line, where top linemen Elton Brown and Kevin Bailey have been sidelined.

For more on Virginia's win over N.C. State, please see N.C. State Game News and Notes.

Virginia Football set to play Maryland this weekend

Wahoowa! Who would have thought that UVa would be playing Maryland for a trip to the Gator Bowl and a second place finish in the ACC? Well, it's true. The Hoos suit it up tomorrow at 5:30 to play the second-place Terrapins, the defending ACC champs.

The game will be televised by ESPN2. If you cannot view the game, tune in to WINA (AM 1070) or WWWV (FM 97.5) if you're local to Charlottesville or the surrounding areas. For out of state listeners, please tune in to the live Internet broadcast.

For pregame articles, post game articles, weather information, stats and game notes and depth chart, please see Maryland Game News and Notes.

Note: If your coming in for the game from the Northern Virginia area (i.e. coming down Route 29 from up north), you may experience some traffic delays. Please plan for an alternate route around the Culpeper-Madison area of Route 29. A major traffic accident has caused a section of Route 29 to be closed in that area. Detour signs will be present, but plan accordingly.

Virginia Basketball wins second exhibition game

The Virginia men's basketball team won their second exhibition game of the season by defeating the One World All-Stars last Sunday by a score of 73-57.

Junior transfer guard Tood Billet led the scoring for the Cavaliers with 17. Billet also had a team-high seven assists.

Senior forward Travis Watson had another tremendous game on the boards, snagging 16. Watson also added 16 points to complete a double double.

Transfer Devin Smith and freshman Derrick Byars saw their first action as Cavaliers. Smith scored 11 points and grabbed two rebounds in 18 minutes, while Byars hit his only shot, a three pointer, grabbed a couple of boards and added an assist in 17 minutes of play.

For more on the game, please refer to the Schedule and News page.

Virginia Basketball to play first regular season game tonight

Virginia takes on Long Island University tonight in University Hall to open the regular season. Game time is scheduled for 7:30. Tickets for this event are sold out. The game will not be televised, but will be aired through WINA/WWWV and all radio affiliates through the Virginia Sports Network.

For post game articles and stats after the game, please refer to the Schedule and News page.

Sabre Newsletter changes format

After a long, hard look at how the Sabre Newsletter was set up, we decided to change our format and release information in a more timely fashion, rather than once per month. We also noticed the need to provide more recruiting information, as well as set up subscriber-only message boards - a request we often received from our long-time supporters.

This new subscription area is called Sabre Edge, and provides a ton of information, including weekly articles, interviews, columns and special features as well as weekly recruiting updates. Since Sabre Edge's release at the end of October, our resident recruiting analyst Chris Horne has provided six recruiting updates exclusive to our subscribers.

If you're interested in signing up, but are afraid of a one-year commitment, we have monthly and quarterly options at a reasonable rate. Please see the link below for details. See you on the Edge!

Sabre Edge

Are you already a Sabre Newsletter subscriber?

Apologies to our current Sabre Newsletter subscribers for not getting more information about the change to our new format, the Sabre Edge. We had planned to send out a mass email release to you the day of the change, but server difficulties prevented us from doing that.

Most of our current Sabre Newsletter subscribers saw our press release on the home page and message boards of TheSabre.com, but for those who did not, please refer to the Sabre Edge Press Release. This release should give you everything you need to know about the transition.

For those who wish not to wade through the entire release, here's some basic need to know information about your account:

If you have an active Sabre Newsletter subscription, you do not need to do anything special to access your Sabre Edge account. Your SN information will work fine. Just go to the home page of TheSabre.com, locate any LOG IN link to Sabre Edge, and then fill in your Sabre Newsletter email address and password for that account. You should then have access to Sabre Edge.

When trying to post on the Edge message boards, please read the instructions carefully. When you post for the first time, please be sure to type the username you normally use for the free message boards, and not your email address.

If you have difficulty with any this, please send an email to [email protected] and I will assist you.
