Robinson Duo Leading Rams on Championship Run
By Chris Horne

No.not that Robinson (VA) duo. You have certainly heard of Chase Anastasio and John Kinzer, two of the most heavily sought after recruits on the East Coast. Another Robinson Rams duo has been just as important during this 6-0 season and last year's championship run, yet do not receive the respect from your average recruiting analyst.

The two we are speaking of are two of the most productive and talented players in Northern Virginia - linebacker Blake Shubert and defensive tackle Adam Fassnacht.

Robinson Head Coach Mark Bendorf describes Shubert as "a really fast linebacker." At 6'1" 225, he creates chaos by tracking down opposing ball carriers all over the field. Shubert has continued his excellence this season, as Bendorf notes that "he has had a really good season. He should make first-team all-state."

Anchoring the Robinson defense with Shubert is Adam Fassnacht, a 5'11' 225 pound defensive tackle. As a junior last season, he was Northern Region runner-up Defensive Player of the Year, barely losing out to Hylton linebacker and Virginia commitment Ahmad Brooks (who earned USA Today National Player of the Year as well). Fassnacht is on his way to earning first-team All-State honors for the third year in a row.

"He is arguably the best player in the region and the top athlete in the state," said Bendorf of Fassnacht. "He is an All-American lacrosse player and was runner-up in the state wrestling championships as well. I don't know many kids who can match that."

The duo has led a defense that has surrendered a maximum of 17 points in every game that Shubert and Fassnacht have played in, including a 34-17 romp over Annandale, who boasts prolific quarterback Travis Johnson. Recently, Robinson beat TC Williams 61-30 without the services of either Shubert or Fassnacht.

Off the field, both players excel in the classroom. Fassnacht boasts a 3.7 grade point average while Shubert maintains a 4.0. Ivy League programs are taking a hard look at Fassnacht, while Shubert has earned scholarship offer from Kent State, Delaware, Utah State, and Hofstra. Coach Bendorf expects Shubert's offer list to grow once more schools review tape of the outstanding linebacker.

For now, the duo will concentrate on bringing another state title to Robinson High School. Just be sure not to forget either of these names in the future.

Howie's son commits!

Chris Long has become Virginia Football's first commitment of the 2004 class, which marks the earliest that any recruit has committed to the Hoos. Long, 6-4, 245, is a fast, powerful defensive lineman. He's a junior for local prep school St. Anne's Belfield in Charlottesville.

For more on Chris Long, see our exclusive report on the Sabre Edge.

Gosh, Deng it!

Virginia basketball coaches were hoping for a commitment from superstar recruit Luol Deng this past week. Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, Deng, 6-foot-7 swingman from Blair Academy in New Jersey, chose Duke in a close battle between the two schools this past Tuesday. The loss of Deng puts Virginia in a tight spot, especially after Jersey City forward Terrence Roberts committed to Syracuse recently.

Sabre Newsletter changes format

After a long, hard look at how the Sabre Newsletter was set up, we decided to change our format and release information in a more timely fashion, rather than once per month. We also noticed the need to provide more recruiting information, as well as set up subscriber-only message boards - a request we often received from our long-time supporters.

This new subscription area is called Sabre Edge, and provides a ton of information, including weekly articles, interviews, columns and special features as well as weekly recruiting updates. Since Sabre Edge's release at the end of October, our resident recruiting analyst Chris Horne has provided six recruiting updates exclusive to our subscribers.

If you're interested in signing up, but are afraid of a one-year commitment, we have monthly and quarterly options at a reasonable rate. Please see the link below for details. See you on the Edge!
