This Week in Virginia Recruiting By Chris Horne Men's Basketball Loses Out on Top Prospects... After receiving a major commitment from highly rated shooting guard Gary Forbes, the Cavaliers lost out on a few prospects this past week:
Other potential prospects include Montrose Christian (MD) 6-8 power forward prospect Linas Kleiza from Lithuania and Jason Cain, a 6-9, 200-pound power forward prospect from John Bartram School in Philadelphia, PA. The Cavaliers have offered both players scholarships according to Rivals.com. According to the Roanoke Times, a potential sleeper prospect could be Paulius Joneliunas, a 6-10, 240-pound center prospect from Lithuania who will play at Roanoke Catholic this season. And now for the Gridiron. Jermaine Dias, Chris Ellis, and Chris Johnson all were on hand to see Virginia's comeback versus North Carolina last week. Dias, an outstanding 6-2, 215-pound linebacker prospect from Hackensack (NJ), has a final list of Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, and Boston College. He will take his official visits before deciding. Ellis, a 6-5, 230-pound defensive end prospect, enjoyed his unofficial visit according to a Charlottesville Daily Progress article, but still lists Virginia Tech as the leader. Look for the two in-state schools to be the finalists for the Bethel (VA) standout, with Tennessee looming with an official visit scheduled for November 30. Charlottesville product Chris Johnson, a 6-4, 255-pound defensive tackle, has favored the Cavaliers for a very long time and could commit within the next month or two. Maryland seems to be the only other major contender for his services.
According to the Charlottesville Daily Progress, the big recruiting weekend this year appears to be January 17, when mammoth 6-4, 325-pound Irvington (NJ) defensive tackle Nate Robinson, 6-1, 180 pound Holy Cross (NJ) receiver James "Jim-Jim" Townsend, and 6-1, 190-pound Orange (NJ) safety Cory Boyd join Chris Ellis and Jermaine Dias for their official visits.
According to ESPN.com, outstanding recruit Tommy Zbikowski has set official visits to Notre Dame (Dec 6), Iowa (Dec 13), Nebraska (Dec 20), and Arizona State (January 18). Tennessee, Virginia, and Boston College are the contenders for the final official visit. Virginia is looking at the 6-1, 190-pound Zbikowski as an athlete.
Tight end prospect Jonathan Stupar is scheduled to visit Florida State this weekend for the Notre Dame game. This will be Stupar's fourth official visit. He has stated earlier that he will take all five official visits. Potential candidates for the final official visits include UNC, Boston College, UCLA, and maybe NC State.
