Virginia Basketball gains commitment from Forbes

The Virginia Cavaliers solidified their backcourt for the next four years yesterday, when Gary Forbes officially announced his decision to play for the Cavaliers. Forbes, a 6-5-, 190-pound shooting guard from Banneker Academy in Brooklyn, NY, chose the Cavs over ACC rival Georgia Tech.

The decision came down to two official visits over the last two weeks. According to Banneker assistant coach Rodney Plummer, it was a tough decision to make, with one major factor turning the tide in favor of the Cavaliers.

"His mother really liked the campus and the staff.she loved Charlottesville," said Plummer. "He wanted to make his mother happy."

Plus, "he felt comfortable at Virginia. Not to say he didn't feel comfortable at Georgia Tech, but he just felt more comfortable with UVa's coaching staff, players, and the campus. Coach Gillen's background also is excellent.he has a great reputation."

Forbes joins JR Reynolds as the other member of the Cavalier recruiting class. Both players, despite the slight difference in stature (JR is 6-3), possess very similar games. Like Reynolds, Forbes has the versatility to play many different positions.

"He can play the 1, 2, or 3," said Plummer. "Honestly, I think he would be more productive at the 2 position than the others," but he can play either.

If last year was any indication, Coach Gillen and company desperately needed some perimeter help as well. The additions of Todd Billet and Devin Smith will help the Cavs this season, and the additions of Reynolds and Forbes will help the Cavs in 2003-2004. According to Plummer, it's Forbes' shooting ability that separates him from the rest.

"Absolutely, his strength would have to be his shot," said Plummer. "He is a deadly shooter."

In addition, Forbes is the type of fiery competitor that energizes everyone else on the team.

"It's hard to match his intensity," said Plummer. "Absolutely, he is an emotional guy. Sometimes we have to calm him down out there."

Forbes is ranked as the #3 shooting guard and the #28 overall player in the country by ESPN.com. He made a name for himself this summer, when he had one of the more impressive performances at the Nike Camp. Gary will certainly be a welcome addition to the Cavaliers program.

Look for a Sabre exclusive interview with Gary Forbes in the coming weeks.
