Big-time basketball forwards to visit UVa this weekend

The Charlottesville Daily Progress reported today that two high-caliber recruits are visiting the UVa grounds this weekend. 6-8 Loul Deng of Blair Academy, NJ and 6-8 Terrance Roberts of St. Anthony's, NJ are taking their official visits to Virginia.

Both stars competed in the Southern Invitational at UVa last spring and were very impressive. Each has offers from several top universities. Deng, who lists Duke, UVa, Missouri and Indiana as his favorites, is one of the most talented recruits UVa has been involved with since Ralph Sampson. Most believe that Deng is favoring Duke, but UVa has been high on his list from the beginning, and the Cavaliers are making a strong push for his services.

Roberts is also a versatile athlete who can play with his back to the basket or take his man off the dribble. He's extremely active on the boards and very quick. His schools of interest include Virginia, Maryland, Florida and Syracuse.

See the Daily Progress report.

Virginia athletic department conserving water
Official UVa Media Release

With drought conditions worsening in the Charlottesville area and mandatory water restrictions in effect, the University of Virginia athletic department has implemented strategies to conserve water. The strategies address water conservation on an ongoing basis and at home football games beginning with the Akron game on Saturday (Sept. 21) at the Carl Smith Center, home of David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium.

The strategies implemented include:

  • Installing up to 50 portable toilets at the stadium as an alternative to the permanent restrooms.
  • Installing aerators on faucets at the stadium and in other athletic facilities that will reduce flow.
  • Monitoring stadium restrooms during games for malfunctioning toilets or sink valves, so on-site plumbers can repair them immediately.
  • Replacing any shower heads that are not low flow heads.
  • Halting the irrigation of all playing and practice fields, including the field at the stadium.
  • Halting all washing of vehicles and mobile equipment.
  • Closing the Memorial Gymnasium swimming pool.
  • Placing signs throughout athletic department facilities emphasizing the water supply emergency.
  • A message on HooVision during football games concerning the importance of water conservation.
For more information on UVa's actions to reduce water consumption, see drought info.
