Mount Vernon Prospect Receiving Heavy Interest

One of the fastest-rising prospects in the state of Virginia is Justin Bell, a 6-3, 250 pound jumbo athlete from Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria.

Bell is currently drawing heavy interest from many top Division I programs. According to Mount Vernon Head Coach Jody Stone, Bell has received written offers from Virginia Tech, Penn State, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Northwestern, Army, and Marshall. Virginia, Michigan State, and many others are also showing significant interest in Bell, although they have not issued any written scholarship offers.

Bell's interest among the top schools may come as a surprise to some, especially considering the fact that he only started playing organized football his sophomore year in high school. In fact, his first full season playing football was last year as a junior.

One person who is not surprised by the heavy interest in Bell is Coach Stone, who recognizes the talent his young tight end/defensive end possesses.

"Justin is easily one of the Top 3 players in Northern Virginia," said Stone. "He is a tremendous receiver. Once he gets out in the open, he just muscles out the defender to make the play. He has great hands and great feet. He runs a solid 4.7 forty."

An excellent athlete, Bell plays basketball and track in addition to football. He finished 2nd in his region in shot put and discuss as a junior. As a tight end, he made 12 receptions last season in a run oriented offense that featured Florida State recruit Thomas Clayton. Six of those 12 receptions were touchdowns.

While Bell may be on the rise to become one of the top prospects in Virginia, Coach Stone realizes there is still room for improvement. But with his excellent athletic ability and raw football talent, Bell has the potential to become an impact player on the next level.

"He is still learning football," said Stone. "Justin is the type of player you redshirt his first season, let him learn the plays and what it takes to play on that level. Then he could come in [as a redshirt freshman] and be a very effective player."

Off the field, Bell maintains a 3.0 GPA and scored over 1,000 on his first SAT try. According to Stone, Bell is a very serious student who makes excellent grades.

As of right now, both in-state schools are in great position to land Justin, with Virginia Tech holding the lead at the moment. According to Stone, the schools are recruiting Bell as a jumbo athlete.

Fork Union DB on the rise

Keep an eye on Fork Union Prep defensive back Delton Ashburn. While the 6-0, 182 pound corner only has offers from Bowling Green and James Madison at this time, he recently ran a 4.28 in the 40, according to Coach Mickey Sullivan.

"He is the best I have ever had [at the corner position]," said Sullivan of Ashburn. "He has great speed and quickness, and good lateral movement."

As a junior last season, Ashburn made two interceptions and had 12 pass breakups. In addition, he returned three kickoff returns for touchdowns. He earned All Prep-League and All-State Private School honors as a junior.

Originally from Newport News, VA, Ashburn is receiving significant mail from some of the top schools in the area. Depending on how his season goes, both in-state schools could quickly become part of his recruiting race.
