   Recruiting News

Virginia still in it for Dias

Rivals.com reported this past week that top New Jersey linebacker Jermaine Dias has narrowed his choices to four schools, Boston College, Michigan, Rutgers and Virginia.

Dias, a 6-2, 215-pound speedster, accumulated 86 tackles last season while playing defensive end, with 23 of those for a loss. He also added 12 sacks and forced five fumbles as a junior.

Dias, who hails from Hackensack, is considered one of the top players in the state of New Jersey and is listed on Tom Lemming's early Top 100 list for national junior recruits.

Dias has received scholarship offers from Miami, Michigan, Boston College, Virginia, Pitt, Iowa, Rutgers, as well as many others.

More New Jersey recruiting

With the lack of top football talent in Virginia this year, the Cavalier coaching staff seems to be putting a lot of effort into grabbing New Jersey's top talent. Already committed to the Hoos is Marvin Richardson, a 6-4, 210-pound linebacker out of East Orange. Look for a feature on Richardson in the June 19th issue of the Sabre Newsletter.

Of Lemming's junior Top 100 list, a couple of New Jersey's top prospects are listing Virginia, which includes Jermaine Dias, listed above. The other Jersey recruit is superstar tight end Greg Olsen of Wayne Hills. Olsen, at 6-6, 235-pounds, already has the size to compete at the college level.

Olsen can play both tight end and defensive end. Last season, he caught 21 passes for 490 yards and 10 touchdowns. On defense, Olsen amassed 89 tackles, including 12 sacks and 33 tackles for loss.

College coaches are listing Olsen as one of the nation's best targets. Greg's brother, Chris, was one of the top recruiting targets last year, and eventually signed on with Notre Dame to play quarterback. In addition to Virginia, Greg is currently listing Boston College, Maryland, Miami, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Rutgers and Syracuse. According to Rivals.com, Olsen has scholarship offers from all of them.

For more New Jersey recruiting for both basketball and football, see the June 19th edition of the Sabre Newsletter.

Pinnix listing Virginia in top four

Amir Pinnix, a 5'10" 195 lb running back from Malcolm X Shabazz HS in Newark, NJ, has been attracting serious interest from the Cavalier coaching staff.  According to Head Coach David McCombs, the interest is mutual.

"He loved his earlier visit to Virginia," said McCombs.  "His top four (in no particular order) are currently Syracuse, Maryland, Virginia and Ohio State."

Pinnix projects as an athlete on many recruiting sites, including Rivals.com.  One of the best athletes in New Jersey, he was a standout basketball player as well, earning Athlete of The Week during the basketball season.  There is no timetable for a decision from Amir.  For more information on Pinnix, please check out the June 19 edition of the Sabre Newsletter.
