   Recruiting News

No more X?

Apparently, the cooling on Xavier Adibi by UVa coaches has not set well with Xavier and especially his father. The Roanoke Times reported today that Xavier's father, Abi Adibi, has told UVa coaches to discontinue the recruitment of his son. While many schools have offered Xavier a scholarship, Virginia apparently had not, to the surprise of many.

Most analysts in the state have pegged Adibi as a future commitment to the Hokies, since his brother Nathaniel has already been there for three years. The recruiting loss of Adibi won't likely damage the recruiting efforts of Virginia coaches, who are currently recruiting some nationally-ranked linebackers from the state of New Jersey. Virginia's interest in Adibi was moderate at best.

Still, losing the interest of a Top 10 in-state talent this early in the game is disappointing, though it will open up UVa's efforts to pursue greater linebacking talent outside the state. Virginia already has a commitment from one New Jersey linebacker, Marvin Richardson. The Hoos also picked up two of the best linebackers in the nation last recruiting season, with Ahmad Brooks and Kai Parham.

Xavier Adibi is currently listed as the State's #1 junior prospect by the Roanoke Times (Doughty's preseason rankings of the senior class will come out in August) and is on Lemming's initial Top 100 list for national recruits.

Callender can fly

Andre "Dre" Callender, a 5-10 182-pound tailback from Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, NJ, is one of the fastest players in the Northeast. He has earned offers from about 15 schools, including the Cavaliers. According to Seton Hall Head Coach Eric Gobble, it is Callender's speed that separates him from the rest of the running backs in New Jersey.

"His best football attributes are vision and speed," said Gobble. "He sees holes developing on the field, and has the patience to set up blocking and pursuit angles for himself. When he does hit the hole, he has explosive speed.

"Our track coaches have clocked him at a 4.28 hand-timed 40. As of yesterday, he had the fastest electronically timed 100m (10.6) and 110HH (13.8) in NJ this season. For the last 2 years, he has been one of the top 10 hurdlers in the nation."

This summer, Dre plans on bulking up for his senior season. According to Coach Gobble, he gained 15 pounds of muscle from his sophomore to junior season. As for his off-the-field background, that may be more impressive than his blinding speed.

"Off the field, Dre is polite, quiet and shy," said Coach Gobble.  His mother and father are very supportive, and provide a strong, family-oriented home.  They stress the importance of schoolwork and the extra effort it takes for Dre to work through his learning disabilities.  He takes the ACT in this month."

As for a list of schools, Dre seems to be pretty much wide open at this point. The Cavaliers are recruiting him as a running back, the position he would prefer to play in college. Nebraska, Michigan and Ohio State are recruiting Dre as a cornerback. He attended Virginia's Junior Day and was very impressed with what he saw, according to Coach Gobble. He and his family hope to visit a number of schools this summer and narrow his list down near September. There is no timetable on a decision.

This week ...

Four UVa baseball players taken in MLB Draft

Four of UVa's baseball players were selected in this week's Major League Baseball Draft. They include Robert Ward (10th round), Dan Street (20th round), David Stone (36th round) and Chris Sweet (37th round).

For more information, please see UVa Baseball.

Randy Jones improving!

UVa corner Randy Jones is making a full recovery from a tragic car accident October 7th that left him disabled with a compound fracture in his left leg, a broken right shoulder and other complications, including the emotional loss of his older brother. Jones spent two months in the hospital and three weeks in an induced coma before being released in December.

Jones, who was unsure of ever playing football again, is now making positive strides for his return to the football field. He's running and lifting weights and appears to be in high spirits.

Jones spoke with Richmond Times Dispatch writer Jeff White recently and said that he's gotten his weight back up and is progressing well, and that doctors have cleared him to return to the field. Jones plans to re-enroll with UVa this fall and is making an attempt to return to the field this season. While the odds are still against him for such a quick return, it appears that Jones will at least redshirt for the upcoming season and train with the team for hopes of playing in 2003. This is great news for Jones, his family and UVa football.

Look for a detailed report on Jones in the upcoming Sabre Newsletter, with a planned release date of June 18th.
