Iowa State Transfer Power to visit UVA

With rising junior PF JC Mathis announcing his intentions to transfer, coach Pete Gillen now has one more scholarship available for the 2002-2003 season. That scholarship could go to 6'5", 210 lb WG/WF Shane Power, who recently announced his intentions to transfer from Iowa State University.

According to the Iowa State official web site, Power was "one of the best athletes on the team.a hustler and a scrapper." Last season, he was one of the Cyclones' most consistent offensive performers while serving as the team's best perimeter defender. He averaged 13.6 points per game, including a 19-point performance in a loss at Missouri. He scored a career-high of 22 points in two separate games last season - versus Drake and Pennsylvania. In addition, Power averaged 4.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and led the team with 1.2 steals per contest. Power shot 44% percent from the field, 80% from the free throw line, and 32% from behind the arc. He is versatile enough to play both the perimeter and low-post game.

Power originally hails from Merrillville Andrean HS in Crown Point, Indiana, where he was a finalist for Indiana's Mr. Basketball Award his senior season. He averaged 26.3 points, 10.4 rebounds and 7.0 assists his senior season. Other schools contending for Power's services include Notre Dame, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Pitt and Mississippi State (according to recruiting analyst Dave Telep). He is scheduled to visit the Cavaliers this weekend.
