Byars participates in Cap Classic

Derrick Byars
Derrick Byars, Virginia's only signed recruit for the 2002 class, participated in last Thursday's Jordan Brand Capital Classic in Washington, D.C. Byars, a 6-7, 200-pound small forward from Memphis, TN, scored 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting. Although, one of his misses was a half court shot to end the first quarter. Byars also snagged two rebounds and dished out one assist in the 18 minutes he played.

The most interesting thing about Byars was his ability to play team basketball even though most of the other All-Stars were not. Byars showed patience throughout the contest and moved well without the ball. Most of his points were based more on hustle than individual moves off the dribble. Most of Byars' points came from put backs from his teammates' missed shots or from fast breaks lay-ups and dunks.

Although Byars never had the opportunity to shoot anything outside of a few feet in the game, it's my understanding that he has excellent range and can step up and hit shots from behind the arc. With the possibility of Roger Mason, Jr. headed to the NBA, Virginia will certainly need Byars' services as soon as he joins the team this summer.

Devin Smith transfer?

With the departure of Maurice Young last season, the men's basketball program has one open scholarship to fill for the 2002 class. Virginia coaches have their eye on Devin Smith, a 6-6 guard-forward from Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. Smith, a NJCAA All-American, has narrowed his choices to Kansas, Iowa and Virginia. Smith averaged over 18 points per game this past season and hit 85 of his 182 three-point attempts (46.7%). He also hit 89% of his free throws.

Smith visited Kansas last weekend. He's scheduled to visit UVa this weekend, but rumors have it that the JUCO superstar may have already committed to the Jayhawks. Sources say that Devin has not made a formal decision and is still scheduled to visit Charlottesville. For more information on Devin, with quotes from his coach, please refer to the April 2002 edition of the Sabre Newsletter.

Virginia Lacrosse moves to number one

I jumped the gun last week, calling Virginia the 'top-ranked' team in the nation. Actually, they were #2 at the time. This week, they are indeed #1 in the nation as voted by the USILA poll. The Hoos moved up in the polls due to their win over Duke last Saturday. The former number one squad, Syracuse, helped the Cavaliers' cause by losing to Cornell. The Orangemen dropped to #4 in the polls with the loss.

Virginia's only loss on the season was to Syracuse on March 2nd. Since then, the Hoos have rolled off seven straight wins against some of the nation's best competition. The Hoos have played three top ten programs within their conference as well as all four of last season's final four tournament teams.

Midfielder Nick Russo earned ACC Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week with two goals and one assist in the 15-10 win over Duke.

The Hoos, 8-1 on the season, will travel to Durham, NC today to prepare for the ACC Tournament. The tournament begins at 6:00 p.m. Friday, April 19th with top-seeded Virginia taking on 4th seed North Carolina. The second match-up of 3rd seed Maryland versus 2nd seed Duke will begin at approximately 8:00 p.m. The winners will advance to the ACC Championship game, which will be played at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 21st. If Virginia wins the championship, it will be the third time in the last four years. The Cavaliers won it in 1999 and 2000.

All games will be played at Koskinen Stadium on the campus of Duke University. The Championship game will be televised by Comcast Sportsnet, Fox SportSouth and the Sunshine Network.

UVa Baseball continues to improve

The Cavalier baseball program has seen some ups and downs this season, but they've held tough against some tough competition. The Hoos defeated top-ranked Florida State in one of their three games earlier in the season. Last weekend, they faced #4 Wake Forest, and played toe-to-toe with the Deacons in the first two games, losing both by only one run. Wake got back into form the final game, defeating the Hoos 9-5 to close out the series.

Tuesday night, the Hoos faced #19 Richmond and lost the game by a score of 15-6. Last night, Virginia bounced back to upset the Spiders, 12-11. The Hoos scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to force the game into extra innings. Virginia scored the game-winning run in the 10th when Spider reliever Jung Wi hit David Stone with the bases loaded. Stone would make the winning defensive play in the bottom of the tenth inning by snagging a line drive down the left field line, leaving the Spiders with two men on base to end the game.

Virginia travels to Salem, Virginia today for a match-up against Virginia Tech. Game time is 7:00 p.m. The Hoos defeated the Hokies in their last match-up in Blacksburg on April 10th, 16-10.
