This week ...

NCAA or NIT?

The Virginia men's basketball team helped their chances of getting an NCAA Tournament bid with a win over #2 Duke last Thursday, 87-84. Adam Hall made his final regular season game in University Hall a special one, scoring 21 points, grabbing 4 rebounds and getting 3 steals. Virginia's other senior scholarship player, Chris Williams, turned in a nice performance as well, scoring 14 points and grabbing 4 rebounds.

While the win over Duke helps Virginia's chances, it does not make them a lock for the Big Dance. The Cavs' 20-point loss at Maryland Sunday didn't help their cause, but Maryland is the #2 team in the nation and is playing better than anyone in the country right now. The Terps also beat #3 Duke at home (by 14 points), so the Cavs shouldn't feel too terrible about the loss, although the defense could have been better. When the Hoos score 92 points and lose, someone isn't playing 'D'.

This writer thinks the Cavs will need to win at least one ACC Tournament game to guarantee a slot in the field of 64. There are just too many variables to consider if the Hoos lose in the opening round against N.C. State. This happened two years ago, and the Hoos found themselves in the NIT based on several upsets in smaller conference championship games. When teams that have no shot at an at-large bid win their conference tournaments, those teams take the place of bubble teams(like Virginia) that are most often deserving of a bid. It's in the hands of the Cavaliers to make sure this doesn't happen to them again. Isn't it ironic that they have a similar situation as 2000, and they have to go through N.C. State to guarantee their bid? The Hoos hope that the results of this year's match-up will be quite different than that of 2000, where the Wolfpack beat the Hoos 76-65 and kicked them down to the NIT.

Virginia's game against N.C. State is scheduled for 2:30 PM EST and will be televised by ESPN. ESPN lists the game at 2:00 PM (as does our tournament bracket), but the game won't realistically start until around 2:30 since the previous game (Maryland vs Play-in winner) doesn't start until noon. All ACC Tournament games are played on the same floor, so there will need to be time for the next game's players to take the floor and conduct warm-ups.

Game times and pairings for all ACC Tournament contests can be found on the ACC Tourney Bracket page.

You can listen to the radio broadcasts locally, or if you're out of the listening area, please tune in to www.virginiasports.com or www.wina.com and listen over the Internet. See schedule page for info or notes and stats leading up to the game.

Teamer named Rookie of the Year

Virginia women's basketball forward Brandi Teamer has earned the 2002 Associated Press ACC Rookie of the Year accolade, the Atlantic Coast Sports Writers Association announced on Wednesday.

The 6-0 forward was also named to the All-ACC second team and ACC All-Freshmen Team last week after helping UVA to a third-place finish in the ACC standings.
