Byars a Finalist for McD's AA

Virginia's only 2002 recruit, Derrick Byars, has been selected as one of the 100 finalists for the McDonald's All-American game. Byars is a 6-6, 200-pound small forward from Ridgeway High School in Tennessee and will play for the Hoos next season. He's expected to step in and compete for playing time with the departure of seniors Chris Williams and Adam Hall. Click here for more information on the finalists for this year's McDonald's game.

   News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

This week ...

New Recruiting Coordinator

Coach Al Groh recently announced that UVa Assistant Football Coach Mike London has been given the responsibilities of recruiting coordinator. London is one of the hot, new assistant coaches who have been responsible for this year's amazing recruiting class. Coach London also coaches the defensive line.

Coach Danny Rocco was the recruiting coordinator for Coach Groh's first full class, a class that finished in the top ten nationally, according to most recruiting services. Rocco has been pulled from the recruiting coordinator duties in order to step up his responsibilities as Assistant Head Football Coach. Rocco also coaches the linebackers.

Baseball Gets New Stadium

Virginia's new baseball stadium is not yet finished, but complete enough for fans to enjoy the start of the 2002 baseball season. The Cavaliers opened up the season in their new stadium the weekend of February 16th, by defeating Bucknell in a three-game series that spanned Saturday and Sunday. The Cavaliers won their first two contests 10-3 and 7-5 on Saturday, then came back Sunday to defeat the Bison 8-0.

Virginia takes a road trip to Charleston, S.C. to compete in The Citadel Tournament on February 22nd and 23rd. They return to action in Charlottesville to play VCU on February 26th. Game time is 3:00 PM. For more information on UVa Baseball www.virginiasports.com.

Virginia's recent basketball games played

Well, since the last SabreMail, things haven't been looking good for the Hoos. Last Sunday, they were blown out by Wake Forest, 92-70. Last night, they traveled to Florida State and came away with a loss in a disappointing effort, 66-59. If you're brave enough, you can view the post-game articles and stats by visiting the schedule page.

When do they play again?

Virginia hosts Georgia Tech this Saturday, February 23rd in University Hall. Game time is set for 4:00 PM EST and will be televised by the Raycom-Jefferson Pilot Network and ESPN2. Check local listings for more information.

You can listen to the radio broadcasts locally, or if you're out of the listening area, please tune in to www.virginiasports.com or www.wina.com and listen over the Internet. See schedule page for info on notes and stats leading up to the game.
