Recruiting tidbits

According to Rivals100, Virginia still leads for Radnor, PA receiver Maurice Stovall. But according to SuperPrep, Stovall is leaning to Michigan. Of course, I'm not sure how much stock to put into SuperPrep since they said Jonathan Lewis was leaning to UVa, when he was telling everyone else at the time that he was leaning to Virginia Tech. Stovall has had a history of switching from one team to another over the past few months, so it's not surprising that there are conflicting reports. Not so long ago, Stovall was leaning to Georgia Tech, and then later Notre Dame. That situation could have had more to do with ex-GT/ex-Notre Dame Coach O'Leary than anything else. Stovall still has UVa high on his list and this one is likely to come down to the end. Stovall visited UVa in early December and still plans to visit Michigan this weekend and Notre Dame the weekend of January 18th. Stovall is considered one of the best wide receiver prospects nationally. He recently participated in the U.S. Army All-American game in San Antonio, TX. Rivals100 rates him as the #11 wide receiver prospect nationally, and Virginia is certainly in need of a big, athletic receiver with speed, something it hasn't really seen since the days of Herman Moore .

Michael Johnson, Jr., the speedster from Newport News, VA, is rumored to be heading to Virginia, but you wouldn't know it by his comments to the media. Johnson says to the media that he is still favoring Miami, but those closer to the situation understand that he's favoring UVa. Perhaps Johnson is just playing games with the media, or maybe he's just keeping his options open until the end. Johnson is taking his official visit to UVa the weekend on January 18th, along with Jonathan Lewis, Ahmad Brooks, Kai Parham, Marcus Vick and Marcus Hamilton among others. Sources say that Johnson will sign on the dotted line come February, along with Hamilton, Parham and quite possibly Brooks. The book is still out on Lewis and Vick, as both have been talking a lot about Virginia Tech in recent weeks. Still, this writer has been told that UVa has as good a chance to land those two as anyone else. Only time, and a certain date in February, will tell. That day is February 6th, national signing day.

   News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

This week ...

Virginia drops first two ACC games

The Cavs rolled off to a nice 9-0 start in out of conference play, but perhaps the quality of competition, or low number of games, did not properly prepare this team to do battle in the ACC.

The Hoos lost their ACC opener to N.C. State last Saturday, 81-74. The Wolfpack shot lights out while protecting the basketball. While the Hoos played an average game offensively, their lack of defense was the greatest key to the upset.

Virginia traveled to Clemson on Tuesday to try and even their ACC record, but a terrible offensive performance caused them to limp out of South Carolina with a 16-point loss to the Tigers.

Coach Pete Gillen is obviously going to have to do some different things in order for the team to compete in the ACC this season. Teams like Duke, Maryland and Wake Forest won't be any easier then N.C. State or Clemson, so the Hoos need to figure out what's wrong, or it could turn out to be a long season for the team, alumni and fans. A lot will be determined about heart, character and effort when the Cavaliers suit up again this Saturday against North Carolina in Chapel Hill. With the Tar Heels experiencing their worst season in almost 50 years, the Cavaliers will view this as a must-win game and one of the keys to a successful season in the ACC.

For more info on these games, other past contests, or game notes and stats, please check out the schedule page.

When is the next basketball game?

Virginia tips off again this Saturday, January 12th against North Carolina in the Dean Dome at Chapel Hill. Game time is 12:00 noon and ESPN is picking up the contest nationally.

The Hoos come back home to play Wake Forest this Tuesday, January 15 at 9:00 EST. Jefferson-Raycom Sports is televising the contest. Tickets are sold out for this game, but check with the ticket office just prior to tip off for tickets that may have been turned in by season ticket holders who may not be attending the game.

You can listen to the radio broadcast locally, or tune in to www.virginiasports.com or www.wina.com and listen over the Internet. See schedule page for info on notes and stats leading up to the game.
