J.R. Reynolds Commits

Reynolds, considered by many recruiting services to be one of the top junior guards nationally, announced his commitment to the University of Virginia yesterday. For more info on Reynolds, please see his recruiting card.

Football Recruiting Heats Up

Many of the Internet recruiting services are abuzz with activity as of late. Mike Farrell, from the Wagon Online, is reporting that running back Michael Johnson, Jr. (Heritage HS, Newport News, VA) is still very much interested in the Cavs. One threat, Tennessee, may have been eliminated from consideration. The Vols apparently want Johnson as a defensive back, but Michael would like to play tailback. Right now, Miami, Virginia and Michigan State are the leaders. Johnson has a visit with Miami this weekend and will visit the Cavaliers on January 18th, along with several more of the state's top players. SuperPrep is reporting as of 11/29 that Johnson favors the Cavaliers.

Quarterback Marcus Vick
Everyone is talking about Marcus Vick's recent decision to visit Virginia Tech. It was assumed that the Hokies weren't anywhere on Vick's radar screen, but now it appears that he'll take a visit to Blacksburg on January 25th, the week after his scheduled visit to UVa. If UVa is to get Vick's services, they'll likely need him to commit the weekend of January 18th. For those who haven't followed recruiting, Vick is the top multi-purpose quarterback in the state of Virginia, and is listed in the top ten of most recruiting services' rankings at his position. Virginia already has a commitment from the state's top drop back passer, Anthony Martinez, so it is possible that this will affect Vick's decision. Still, Vick says that he'd consider committing to the Cavaliers if they're able to pull in a great recruiting class. Mark January 18th on your calendar.

UVa needs offensive linemen in the worst way. That's why everyone is hoping that Randy Hand, a 6-6, 305 OL from Estero, FL will commit to the Cavaliers soon. He recently visited North Carolina, yet still favors the Cavaliers over Florida, UNC and South Carolina. Hand will visit UVa the weekend of December 14th.

Marcus Hamilton (6-1, 180, Clifton, VA), one of the nation's best defensive backs and the top player at his position in Virginia, is good friends with Culpeper H.S. defensive back Stefan Orange. Orange has already committed to the Cavaliers, and it appears that this will be the choice of Hamilton before it is all said and done. Virginia's biggest worry was Georgia, and Hamilton is not happy with the Bulldogs asking him to change his visit date. Georgia was at the top of his list, but now it appears that UVa is the team to beat. Hamilton is scheduled to visit Maryland this weekend, Michigan State next weekend, Boston College on January 4th and will conclude his visits with Virginia on - you guessed it - January 18th.

Cavs Finish Football Season

Virginia defeated Penn State on Saturday to close out their 2001 season. While the Cavs finished with their first losing season in 15 years, there is much to be encouraged by. Virginia had some good moments this season, defeating Clemson on the road, a ranked Georgia Tech team, and a resurgent Penn State team trying to get into a bowl game.

In several of UVa's losses this year, they did not fold. Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia Tech jumped on the Hoos early, yet the Cavs fought back to make it a game in both contests.

While the Cavaliers apparently struggled with the schemes put in place by Coach Groh and his new staff, there were still a few bright spots. The defensive backfield improved, as did most of the defense. UVa shut out both Penn State and Virginia Tech in the second half of both contests. Offensively, the Cavaliers installed a new system and both quarterbacks (Spinner and Schaub) improved as the season progressed. That's good news for next year.

While the Hoos lose a few players next season, they should more than make up for those losses with a powerful recruiting class, as well as several red-shirted players waiting to get their shot. The offensive line seems to be the greatest concern, but the play of Mike Mullins and freshman Elton Brown late in the year is encouraging. If UVa can land some offensive line studs in this recruiting class, next season could be better than expected.

Virginia-Auburn Game Televised?

Many Wahoo fans might be surprised when they tune in to the game on Saturday at 4:30 Eastern Standard Time. The surprise might be that they can't pick it up. The game is scheduled as an ESPN regional broadcast. Logically speaking, many would think this means it gets shown in the appropriate areas, like the towns that the schools are located. Not so. The only way to pick up the game in Virginia appears to be with ESPN's Full Court package. Individual games are available for $5.99 through DirecTV and Digital Cable systems, although Adelphia Communications in Charlottesville only offers the complete package for $99. Check with your local cable company for details.

Non-pay-per-view broadcasting is as follows:

Comcast Sports Southeast (Atlanta)
Action Sports (Portland, Ore.)
NESN - New England Sports Network

Satellite Dish Coordinates:

Satellite - Galaxy 4R, Transponder 21, 62, 6.8
