Thoughts on Ahmad Brooks

Ahmad Brooks
This writer had the opportunity to catch the first half of Ahmad Brooks' game last Friday night. First impressions. that young man is huge! It wasn't hard picking him out, since he was bigger than most everyone on his team. Brooks has a presence about him on the field, and it isn't restricted to size.

Brooks, standing a solid 6-4 and weighing 230 pounds, plays both running back and linebacker for C.D. Hylton High School in Northern Virginia. On defense, he flies to the ball with the speed of a defensive back. He is also an impressively punishing tackler.

If Brooks wasn't such a great defensive player, every school in the country would likely be recruiting him as one of the top running backs. He starts the formation the same way almost every down, by splitting out near the left offensive tackle. He usually runs to his right and takes the hand-off or pitch. From there it's an adventure for the opposing team to stop him. His speed, combined with his power and agility, make him almost impossible to bring down.

Comparisons on defense? Jamie Shaper. On offense? Terry Kirby.

Brooks' team is undefeated going into the playoffs tomorrow night, and he is hoping for his third state championship in four years. Brooks was injured most of last season, the only year his team didn't win the state.

GT win witnessed by top recruits

Kai Parham
Linebacker Kai Parham picked a great day to take an unofficial visit to Virginia last Saturday. The Cavaliers, reeling from a 5-game losing streak, shocked ranked Georgia Tech in the final seconds with a hook and lateral from Spinner to McMullen to Pearman.

Parham was there with current commitments Keenan Carter, Brad Butler, Jason Snelling, Damian Spradlin and Stefan Orange.

Stefan Orange ramblings

Stefan Orange
Stefan Orange, a 6-1, 180-pound cornerback from Culpeper H.S. committed to UVa last month. Orange has recently moved up the rankings nationally, and is currently the 17th best cornerback in the country as rated by Rivals100.com.

Culpeper H.S. has an excellent shot at going deep into the playoffs, and Orange is one of the primary reasons.

"He's a special kid for us," Culpeper Head Coach Lou Sorrentino said. "We've won four district championships since he's been here. He's been starting for us since he was a freshman. A lot of people expect him to come out and be perfect every time, he's under a lot of pressure. He's a great kid. He's a competitor. As good as he is as a football player, he's a better person."

Orange's best asset is his ability to make the big play and put everything on the line.

"The one thing about him is that he's a winner," Sorrentino said. "He's very consistent - very mature. He makes the right decisions. He's going to play hard for you. Whether he can cover the Florida State guys or not, I don't know that. But, you're going to get a hard working kid. He's going to help [Virginia's] team in one shape or form. If it's not corner, it will be somewhere else. A lot of people look at the things on the outside, but what's special about him is all of the internal stuff - the intangibles. He's a 3.5 student - a fine young man - a leader."

Orange was recruited by Virginia as a corner, but his high school coach thinks he can help out in other areas.

"In college, he could play any of the defensive back positions, or he could be a receiver," Sorrentino said. "He's just a good athlete and a solid kid."
