   Recruiting

So far, the UVa football coaching staff has done a great job with recruiting.  The Hoos have landed some top talent already, and look to be leading or close to leading for several more top players.  Here's a look at Virginia's current commitments and where they're ranked nationally by Rivals100.com.

Darryl Blackstock - NR, DL (post grad school)
Brad Butler - #70, OT
Braden Campbell - #22, strong side DE
Keenan Carter - #32, DT
Willie Davis - #56, S
Tony Franklin - #21, all-purpose RB
Ton Hagan - #7, P
Anthony Martinez - #4, pro-style QB
Stefan Orange - #34, CB
Jason Snelling - NR, FB
Damian Spradlin - #5, C
Kenneth Tynes - #58, RB (is projected DB in college)

Here's a list of just some of UVa's top targets who are listing the Hoos in their top two or three schools of choice.

D.J. Bell - #58, OT
Ahmad Brooks - #1, LB
D'Brickashaw Ferguson - #16, OG
Marcus Hamilton - #13, CB
Randy Hand - #8, OT
Devin Hester - #2, CB
Michael Johnson - #2, all-purpose RB
Jonathan Lewis - #13, DT
Brian Mattes - #15, TE
Ron Morton - #45, WR
Kai Parham - #1, weak side DE
Stephen Sene - #37, OT
Maurice Stovall - #8, WR
Marcus Vick - #1, dual-threat QB
Jimmy Williams - #45, S

If Virginia lands only half of the players on the second list above, they'll likely have a Top 10 class nationally.  While it's still very early in the recruiting season, Virginia is ranked #14 nationally (by Rivals100.com) for their class thus far.

Of the in-state players listed above that have not committed, six are listed in the Top 10 of TheSabre.com's "A List", and five of those are in the Top 6 (or Super Six as we like to call them).

   News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

This week ...

Our hearts and prayers go out to Randy Jones, a true freshman cornerback who was severely injured in an automobile accident last month. It is being reported that Jones recently came out of a three-week long coma.

Three people were killed in the accident, including Randy's brother, Moses Wilson.

Jones was considered one of top recruits in the state of North Carolina last season, and one of the nation's best at his position. He was red-shirted this season by Virginia and would have competed for playing time at cornerback next season.

For anyone wishing to send letters of encouragement to Randy and his family, please do so at the following address:

A hot topic on the TheSabre.com basketball message board of late has been the interest in the team's new uniforms. UVa Basketball switched from Reebok to AND1 over the summer, and everyone is interested in knowing what the new uniforms will look like. This writer got a glimpse of the new threads yesterday. Impressive. Sharp. Very professional. So you want to know what they look like? Well, it's too hard to explain in words. You can either wait for the photos to appear next week on TheSabre.com, or you can take in the exhibition game tomorrow night .

Virginia Basketball opens up its season with two exhibition games in early November. The first is a contest with the Nantucket Nectars on Friday, November 2nd at 7:30 PM. The second exhibition game is with the Los Angeles Stars on Sunday, November 11th at 2:00 PM. Both games will be played at University Hall. Admission is only $5.00 for children and adults.

For more info on future basketball games, please see our schedule and notes page. By the way, if you cannot make it to the exhibition games, and you live too far away to hear the WINA broadcast, try tuning into www.virginiasports.com or www.wina.com for the online radio broadcast.

The Virginia basketball program received an additional $20 million donation in support of a new basketball arena. This is the second such gift this year. For more info on this generous gift, please see the news release.

Virginia Basketball Head Coach Pete Gillen received a 10-year contract. See Times-Dispatch article.

Please fill out our demographic survey. We only have 1,400 respondents so far. We'd like to get that number up to 3,000. The survey is completely anonymous and only takes about 2 minutes of your time. Please help us to attract advertisers by completing this survey.

Another message board poster has decided to donate two Sabre Newsletter subscriptions. 'crutch' has followed SWFLHoo's lead to help us increase the number of SN subscribers.

The first goes to the person who lives the farthest away from Charlottesville, and does not already have an SN subscription. Since we don't have the time to 'confirm' your actual location, it's going to be 'on your honor' to tell us where you PRESENTLY live. Please send an email to [email protected] with your CITY and STATE, as well as your FIRST and LAST NAME and we'll consider you for the prize. Deadline for this entry is this Friday, 5PM EST.

The second Sabre Newsletter subscription goes to the person who can predict the closest final score of the upcoming UVa-Wake Forest football contest. Please do not respond to this post with your answer. Instead, email [email protected] and put your prediction in the subject block of the email. In the event of a tie, the names will be put into a drawing. Deadline for your entry is this Friday, 5PM EST. [email protected]

Winners will be notified on Monday, November 5th, 2001.
