Did a top wide receiver just commit to the Hoos?

Rumor has it that UVa has received a commitment from wide receiver Ron Morton, a 6-1, 180-pound wide receiver from Hamilton West High School in Trenton, NJ.

TheSabre.com contacted Hamilton West's athletic director and assistant football coach Steve Gazdek for comments earlier today. If Morton has indeed committed to UVa, his coaches aren't aware of it at this time.

"Morton has made a commitment to visit Virginia," Gazdek said. "Now, unless something's changed - like last night - and he didn't tell me about it. I'm the one who's been handling his recruiting process. Who knows with Ron - he may have told the coaches that he wanted to go to Virginia. Virginia is one of the schools that he definitely wants to visit. I haven't seen Ron today, so I have not heard that he committed to Virginia."

Coach Gazdek said that Ron had definitely narrowed his list to five schools, but has not made any official visits at this time.

"His five schools that he'd committed to visit were Georgia Tech, Virginia, Pittsburgh, Penn State and Rutgers. I know he liked Virginia. He has family in the area. He was definitely leaning toward Virginia.

"He can run like a deer, and I think that's why most teams are recruiting him. He's one of the top state sprinters in New Jersey. His best time in the 100 meters was 10.75. He brings a lot of speed, and he's a big receiver."

Rivals100.com lists Morton as their #45 national prospect. His reported 40-yard dash time is 4.35.

Martinez likes the Hoos

Anthony Martinez
Sometime in January of 2002, don't be surprised if highly touted quarterback recruit Anthony Martinez commits to the University of Virginia. UVa is a strong favorite with the Martinez family, and if the Hoos land a few blue chip recruits, it will make the decision much easier for Anthony.

"I like those guys down in the Chesapeake area," Martinez said. "Kai Parham, that linebacker - he's a player. Maurice Stovall, the wide receiver. Those guys can play ball. If they were to go to Virginia, it would be hard not to commit there, because those guys can play and I think they could bring a lot to that team."

Martinez is considered by many to be one of the top ten quarterbacks in the nation. This was evident when he performed well at the Nike Combine at Penn State last spring. Although ill with the stomach flu for most of the camp, Martinez still gave a strong showing - strong enough to get himself invited to the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp in California.

TheSabre.com caught up with Martinez last Friday. Hear what Anthony had to say in this month's Sabre Newsletter.

Vick-Johnson Connection?

If you believe the rumors, quarterback recruit Marcus Vick and running back recruit Michael Johnson are likely to attend the same college. These rumors appear to be true, considering that this morning's Daily Press had articles about each of these players, including their top five schools of choice.

Vick, a 6-1, 180-pound quarterback from Warwick High in Newport News, VA, is considering Tennessee, Miami, Florida State, Virginia and Notre Dame.

Johnson, a 5-10, 190-pound running back from Warwick High in Newport News, VA, is considering Virginia, Tennessee, Michigan State, Florida and Miami.

The fact that the two lists are so similar is a strong indication that these two have been discussing the possibility of playing college football together. For the past few months, rumor has it that each player is strongly considering Miami and Virginia. Both Vick and Johnson camped at UVa this past summer, along with Martinez. All three players are in TheSabre.com's A-List Top 7 for in-state prospects. All three are considered top ten players at their position nationally by most recruiting services.

   News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

This week ...

The UVa-Florida State football game, scheduled for October 20th, will be played at 7:45 PM and will be nationally televised by ESPN.

Virginia football dropped a difficult contest at Maryland last Saturday, but they have a chance to make amends this Saturday when they travel to North Carolina. UNC looked to be in store for a rough season in the early going, but they levelled Florida State and haven't lost a game since. The UNC-Virginia football game will not be televised. If you're not traveling to the game, try keeping up with the action on TheSabre.com Football Message Board.
