Correction

A correction needs to be made from the last SabreMail. Instead of Keith Vanderlaan, it should read Nick Vanderlaan. Apologies to Nick.

Basketball Recruiting

There's still no public announcement that J.R. Reynolds has committed to the University of Virginia basketball program. Although Reynolds has not rescheduled his press conference to announce his decision, sources close to the situation say there's nothing to worry about. Reynolds, a 6-3, 185-pound swing guard from Roanoke, has apparently already given his commitment to UVa.

Football Recruiting

Rumors are running rampant about the potential landslide of blue chip recruits who may commit to UVa this season. Recruiting analyst Mike Farrell has echoed many of these rumors on his most recent interview with CavTalk, and today with his report on The Wagon Online. Farrell says that both Ahmad Brooks and Kai Parham, arguably the two best linebacker prospects in the nation, are listing UVa as their leader.

Rumor has it that both Marcus Vick and Anthony Martinez are favoring the Cavaliers strongly. Both are considered by most recruiting sources as top national quarterback prospects. Vick and Martinez both shined when they camped at Virginia this past summer. Vick is considered to be as good, possibly better, than his older brother Michael was at this stage of his career. Michael Vick was the first pick in the NFL Draft this past spring.

A host of recruits were present at the UVa-Duke football game last Saturday. In attendance were defensive back Stephan Orange, offensive lineman D.J. Bell, tight end Brian Mattes, offensive lineman Brad Butler, defensive tackle Keenan Carter and running back Antwan Stewart to name a few.

Marcus Hamilton, a 6-1, 180-pound cornerback out of Centreville H.S. in Clifton, VA says that his two favorites are Georgia and Virginia. Hamilton is considered the top defensive back in the state of Virginia by many sources, and is listed 9th on the Sabre 'A' List.

Virginia has gotten strong interest from big offensive lineman Randy Hand. Hand, a 6-6, 305-pound offensive lineman from Estero H.S., Florida, is now favoring Virginia. Other schools of interest include Florida State, Michigan and Georgia. Sources say that Hand really enjoyed his visit to UVa and got along well with the coaching staff. With four starting offensive linemen graduating this spring, Virginia is in need for offensive linemen who can step in and play early. Hand, and D.J. Bell, are two players that the Cavaliers are really pushing for.

   News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

This week ...

As previously rumored, Majestic Mapp's recovery from knee surgery last year did not go as planned. Yesterday, the UVa Media Relations office prepared an official release stating that Mapp will sit out the 2001-02 basketball season. He will undergo another reconstructive surgery later this month and hopes to be back in full swing for the 2002-03 season. Mapp will most likely have the opportunity to apply for an addition medical redshirt, giving him a sixth year. If granted, Mapp would still have three years of eligibility at Virginia. Official release.

Tired of the MicronPC.com Bowl? Never fear, the Tangerine Bowl is here. This season, the Tangerine Bowl will replace the often poorly organized MicronPC.com Bowl. Instead of playing the game at Pro Player Stadium in Miami, Florida, the Tangerine Bowl will be played in Orlando, home of the Florida Citrus Bowl. For more on the Tangerine Bowl and how it affects the ACC, check out ESPN's Report.

Virginia Football finally did it. They finally made the Duke-UVa game a no-contest, defeating the Blue Devils 31-10. This marked the first time since November 1999 that the Wahoos have been able to beat a Division 1-A opponent by three touchdowns or more. Looks like the Cavaliers are finally focusing on every game. For more on the Duke-Virginia football game, please check out Duke Game News.

The Maryland and Virginia football programs are tied for first place in the ACC. Who'd have thunk it? This Saturday's match-up could have major implications for Virginia's season. A win keeps them in first place with a legitimate shot at postseason play. A loss. well, we won't go there. For a preview and game news, plus info on weather, Internet radio broadcast, as well as game notes and cumulative statistics for the season, please go to Maryland Game News.

Virginia held its weekly football press conference on Monday. To hear what Coach Al Groh and some of the players had to say about the upcoming contest, please refer to Press Conference Notes.

The news about Majestic Mapp has brought some concern from the Wahoo faithful. Those who know Majestic, and even those who have only met him briefly, understand that he's a bright young man with great character, not to mention a fine athlete who would have likely helped UVa to greatness this year. When this McDonald's All-American committed to Virginia a few years ago, it started a landslide of commitments that has resulted in Virginia becoming a solid Top 10 program. Unfortunately, Mapp has yet to reap the rewards of his commitment, other than to watch from the sidelines while his teammates beat the likes of Duke, UNC, Maryland, Wake, Tennessee, Missouri and Purdue. Eager to get on the floor and help his team for the upcoming season, Mapp will now have to support his team from the bench for an additional year. Check out what one fan had to say in this week's Basketball Message Board Post of the Week.
