Basketball Recruiting

J.R. Reynolds, the 6-3, 185-pound swing guard from Roanoke Catholic High School in Roanoke, Virginia, has yet to reschedule his press conference. His intentions were to commit to the University of Virginia basketball program a couple of weeks ago, but those plans were thwarted by the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Reynolds is scheduled to be in attendance at the Duke-Virginia football game. If you see Coach Gillen and staff walking a young man around the sidelines prior to the game, it's most likely J.R. Reynolds.

As we find out more about J.R. Reynolds' future commitment, we will keep you updated. Keep up with discussions about this and other basketball matters on TheSabre.com Basketball Message Board.

Football Recruiting

It's no secret that blue chip football recruits like Kai Parham, Ahmad Brooks, Michael Johnson, Maurice Stovall and others are waiting to see how well the Cavaliers fair this season before deciding which schools they will attend. Virginia's last second victory at Clemson in Death Valley certainly did not hurt Coach Groh's cause. Rumor has it that several big name recruits are ready to jump on board with Virginia soon. An unconfirmed report has many top recruits planning to commit the weekend of October 20th, which happens to be the Florida State game weekend. Keep up with discussions about this and other football matters on TheSabre.com Football Message Board.

Mapp no longer on crutches, but still not yet participating in informal team practices (pick-up games). Rumor has it that he will be ready to suit up when official basketball practice begins on October 13th. If not, Roger Mason and Keith Jenifer are poised to help out at point guard until Mapp can return.

Speaking of pick-up games. I had the change to stop by and watch an informal practice a few days ago. Other than Roger Mason, the player who stood out the most was Jason Clark. Clark was quick to get up and down the court, catching alley-oop passes, dunking on the fast break and blocking several shots. Clark has also gained some additional muscle mass, and it appears that he will contribute for the Cavaliers immediately.

Clark scaled the recruiting rankings quickly last season while playing for Kevin Keatts at Hargrave Military Academy. Some say that Clark has blossomed into perhaps the best catch of that recruiting class, which included Jermaine Harper, Keith Jenifer, transfers Todd Billet and Keith Vanderlaan and blue chip top 30 recruit Elton Brown. For more info on Jason Clark, please see his recruiting card.

Security measures have increased at Scott Stadium for the Duke game and beyond. Pass-outs will no longer be allowed at half time. Purses and small bags will be allowed into the stadium, but they will likely be searched. Back packs and other large non-essential items will not be allowed in the stadium. In order to accommodate these new measures, Craig Littlepage said that portable toilets will be increased in the lots around the stadium, and the lots will be open three hours prior to game time. Another concern for many is families with small children or infants. Littlepage said that pass-outs for emergencies and attendance of these matters would be allowed on a case-by-case basis. Because of the additional security checks that will be performed before entering the stadium, gates will be opened two hours prior. For more info, check out the news release on security measures.

Tickets are still available for Duke-UVa game. This game is not televised, so pick up your tickets and get on over to Scott Stadium for the game this Saturday.

Virginia Football is 1-0 in conference play this season with their win over 19th ranked Clemson. This puts them at 2nd place in the ACC behind only Maryland. Any time you want to check up on who's ranked where in ACC play, please see ACC Standings.

The Duke game is just around the corner. Coach Groh held his weekly Monday morning press conference. Here's some of what he had to say.

"Duke has some players that can create on offense," Groh said. "I think Reggie Love is a dangerous player. He played on the Duke basketball team. Any player that can get eight rebounds in the ACC Championship game makes him a dangerous player. He's a 6-4, 226 wide receiver. That's an interesting match-up. I wish we had one of those. Their tight end is 6-6, 250. He was an All-ACC player last year. He's got size, excellent hands and vertical speed."

For more quotes from Coach Groh on the upcoming game, please check out the Press Conference Report.

UVa Media Relations is now providing us with an online version of Game Notes for each game. Cumulative stats from the previous games are included in each game notes package. Because of this, we are no longer placing the cumulative stats on the Statistics page. For this week's cumulative stats, please refer to the Duke Game Notes.
