Virginia Accepts Bid to Play in Continental Tire Bowl
Cavaliers Fans Encouraged to Buy Tickets Through UVa Ticket Office
Official Virginia Media Relations Release

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The University of Virginia has accepted a bid to play Pittsburgh from the Big East Conference in the 2003 Continental Tire Bowl at Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., on Dec. 27. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and will be televised nationally by ESPN2.

The Cavaliers received the bid following their 35-21 win over Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon. The win is Virginia's second in a row as the Cavaliers improve to 7-5 this season.

This is the second year in a row the Cavaliers have played in the Continental Tire Bowl. Virginia defeated West Virginia 48-22 in the bowl's inaugural game last December.

This is Virginia's 14th bowl appearance overall; the Cavaliers are 5-8 in bowl games.

Pittsburgh is 8-4 overall this season and finished third in the Big East with a 5-2 conference record.

The bowl match-up marks the first time the teams have met since an 18-7 Pittsburgh win in 1955. The Panthers won 26-0 in 1953 in the only other meeting of the two schools.

Virginia fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets through the UVa Virginia Athletic Ticket Office. The UVa ticket office is accepting orders beginning Monday (Dec. 1) at 9:00 a.m. Tickets may be purchased by calling the ticket office at 800/542-8821 or 434/924-8821. Ticket prices range from $27.50 to $67.50 based upon location.

Seat assignments will begin at the conclusion of the Dec. 5 sale day. Orders will be accepted as long as the supply of tickets lasts.

For UVa students, a special in-person sale starts Thursday (Dec. 4) at 9:00 a.m. at the ticket office in Bryant Hall, located in the south end of Scott Stadium. Student tickets will be $52.50 and will require a valid UVa student I.D. at the time of purchase. Students wishing to be seated together should purchase at the same time due to reserved seating.
