Armstrong commits

Virginia received a commitment from Robert Armstrong on Friday. Armstrong is a 6-2, 300-pound defensive line prospect from Washington & Lee H.S. in Arlington, Virginia.

Armstrong camped at UVa last summer, and chose the Cavaliers over West Virginia and Marshall. Virginia Tech also showed interest, but had not offered.

Right now, Armstrong appears to be a sleeper recruit. He's not on most recruiting services' radar screens and Rivals100 has him listed as a two-star recruit and not ranked at his position.

Culpeper beats Potomac

Culpeper High School defeated Potomac Saturday for a chance to play Patrick Henry-Ashland in next week's Division 5 State semifinal.

Culpeper was led by the efforts of UVa-commitment Stefan Orange. Orange played on both sides of the ball. On offense, he played quarterback. On defense, corner.

For Potomac, UVa-commitment Keenan Carter led the way on defense. Carter stuffed just about everything Culpeper could dish out in the first half. Also on defense was another UVa commitment, Antwan Stewart.

Stewart played corner on defense and just about every skill position on offense. Carter's defense, along with some big plays by Stewart on offense, lifted Potomac to a 14-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the story was the Culpeper defense. They played almost the entire second half on Potomac's side of the 50-yard line. In most cases, Culpeper's defense got the ball back inside Potomac's 30. Orange led the way from that point and got his team 17 points before letting the defense close out the ball game. Potomac's last-ditch effort was a long pass from Stewart, but was intercepted and brought back for a touchdown with no time on the clock, making the final score 24-14.

Orange and Stewart had to go head to head on a couple of occasions. On one play, Stewart made a leaping grab over Orange to set up their first touchdown. Late in the game, it was Orange's turn to get the upper hand, knocking down a pass intended for Stewart.

Carter showed why UVa is so interested in him. Culpeper had a tough time blocking Carter, and had to run away from him in the second half to have any chance at moving the ball. Carter sacked Orange on several plays in the first half, but didn't have as much success in the second.

It was easy to see how all three of these athletes received scholarship offers from Virginia. Carter is a monster on the defensive line. Often double-teamed, he still found a way into the backfield on almost every play. Orange and Stewart have the speed and skills to play receiver or defensive back at the next level. Both are exceptionally quick, and both can make plays with the ball in their hands.

Culpeper now advances to the state semi-final game against Patrick Henry-Ashland, a team led by another UVa commitment, All-American quarterback Anthony Martinez. The game is scheduled for next Saturday, but location and time have not been set.
