Virginia Football gets two more commitments!

The University of Virginia football program has received two more commitments, pushing their 2002 recruiting class to eleven (including Darryl Blackstock).

Running back Jason Snelling and quarterback Anthony Martinez committed to UVa Sunday evening. Both players from the Richmond, Virginia area. Snelling is a 6-1, 215-pound running back from Lloyd C. Bird H.S. in Chesterfield, Virginia.

Snelling runs a 4.4 forty yard dash and is said to possess power and speed. Snelling can run inside the tackles or break it to the outside.

Snelling was chosen All District and All-Region last season. This season, he's rushed for over 600 yards in 5 games and has scored 8 touchdowns on offense, and another on defense, returing an interception 72 yards.

Snelling has been compared by some as a Charles Way-type player. With Tyree Foreman graduating this spring, Snelling will likely get a look at fullback as a true freshman.

"Snelling is a big back who could play fullback in college," said one reporter from VaPreps.com. "Between 1998 to 2000 Snelling rushed for 2,709 yards. He's very powerful and 'quick'. I am not sure of his reported 40 [yard dash] but he gets to the hole in a hurry."

Martinez is one of the nation's best quarterbacks. He's big, 6-4, 220-pounds, and has a strong, accurate arm. Martinez plays for undefeated Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, Virginia. Martinez camped at UVa this past summer, along with Marcus Vick, Michael Johnson, Jonathan Lewis and several other nationally recognized players.

Martinez shot up through the preseason quarterback rankings like a rocket, after his performance in the Nike Combine at Penn State last spring. That performance earned him a trip to the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp in San Diego, California, where only the very best QBs in the nation are selected to participate.

"[Anthony] and Jason committed last night," said David Martinez (Anthony's father). "I didn't think he could go wrong with UVa. Coach Groh is trying to take it to the next level. Even though Coach Welsh took Virginia to where they are now, which is good - hopefully Coach Groh will take them to a championship level. We're excited about it. We're talking about one of the top universities in the country. We've been leaning that way for a while. We think [Anthony's] happy with his decision."

Martinez has just gotten off the phone with Coach Mike Groh last night and realized that he should have gone ahead and committed on the spot. Martinez then got Jason Snelling and Coach Mike Groh on the phone a moment later for a three-way call, and both players committed at that time.

Since Martinez camped with several of the state's top recruits, he will likely be on the phone over the coming months to encourage others to commit to Virginia as well.

"Anthony's got some numbers for some kids to call, so he's hopefully going to lend a hand with the recruiting effort."
