Virginia Named 2015 Preseason ACC Men’s Soccer Favorite

From VirginiaSports.com Official News Release

Virginia has been tabbed as the Atlantic Coast Conference men’s soccer preseason favorite, according to a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches. Coming off a national championship in 2014, the Cavaliers were named by four coaches as the conference’s team to beat, followed by Clemson, Louisville, North Carolina, and Notre Dame with two votes apiece.

With 64 points, Virginia also was named by seven coaches as the favorite in the Coastal Division, edging out North Carolina, which had four first-place votes and 59 points. Notre Dame was picked third with 54 points and one first-place vote. Duke (35), Virginia Tech (26), and Pitt (14) rounded out the division.

Louisville was picked as the Atlantic Division favorite, receiving six first-place votes while totaling 66 points. Clemson was selected by five coaches as the Atlantic favorite and had 62 points. Wake Forest (46), Syracuse (40), NC State (20), and Boston College (18) rounded out the Atlantic Division.

The ACC placed seven teams in the NCAA Championship field in 2014, marking the second-straight year that the league has had the most teams from any conference. Virginia’s national title was the seventh in the last 10 years by an ACC squad and 17th in league history.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Last week I posted two “Freshman Report” features for EDGE subscribers to read. One was on linebacker C.J. Stalker while the other was on offensive tackle Grant Polk. Both players enrolled on Grounds this past January, and in the “Freshman Report” features they discuss their experiences at UVa so far and much more. Both are linked at the bottom of this email.

This week, I’ll put out two “Redshirt Freshman Report” features. One will be on offensive tackle Jake Fieler, who is currently slotted as the team’s starting right tackle. The other is on reserve Cory Jones, an athletic and fast player who is settling into his outside linebacker role. Jones is currently running with the second team linebackers.

UVa football is another step closer toward closing out its class of 2016 after Robert Snyder pledged to the Hoos this past week. Snyder, a 6’3”, 225-pound linebacker prospect, chose Virginia over offers from NC State, Iowa, and opportunities at Ivy League schools as well. Snyder attends Suwanee (GA) Collins Hill, where he has started 23 games the past two seasons. He played outside linebacker his junior season but will play middle linebacker his senior year. Stay tuned for more on UVa’s latest commitment later this week.

On the basketball recruiting front, EDGE subscribers can check out my latest update on class of 2016 commitment Jay Huff. The 6’11” forward, a product of Voyager Academy (Durham, N.C.), suffered a broken right hand in June but is recovering and is expected to be 100 percent by the time his senior season rolls around. His father and head coach, Mike Huff, took some time to discuss Jay’s summer, upcoming season, and more. The article is linked below.

On Saturday, UVa men’s basketball will host its annual Elite Camp at the John Paul Jones Arena. I plan to be there, so stay tuned for news and notes following the event.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
