This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

In what is huge news, Austin Nichols revealed on Sunday that he is transferring to the University of Virginia.

“I am transferring to the University of Virginia! Thanks to my family, friends, fans and also to the University of Memphis for 2 great years,” Nichols tweeted.

The 6’9” post prospect provides a major boost to UVa’s frontcourt in the 2016 season. He’ll have two years of eligibility left beginning in 2016/2017, as he will have to sit out this coming season due to NCAA Division 1 transfer rules.

As mentioned in my article on Nichols’ transfer (linked below), UVa now has two scholarships remaining in class of 2016 recruiting. Combo guards Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome as well as forward Jay Huff have verbally committed to the Hoos, and all three are expected to sign official letters of intent in November. So where do the Hoos go from here?

Well, we know the staff wants to add at least one more frontcourt prospect. Blue Ridge (St. George, VA) standout Mamadi Diakite tops the list of targets, and right now he is Virginia’s best bet in terms of being the next possible commitment. Virginia also extended an offer to athletic wing DeAndre Hunter this past week (article below). I hope to have much more this week on the Pennsylvania product, who measures in at 6’6” or 6’7”. This week, I’ll run down all known class of 2016 targets - frontcourt or elsewhere - and where UVa stands with each.

On the football recruiting front, I hope to have more on UVa most recent commitments, Hasise Dubois and Bryce Hall. Both players are tall “athlete” types with ability at wide receiver and defensive back. Dubois, a native of New Jersey, seems likely to play wide receiver, while Hall, who hails from Pennsylvania, could well end up on defense despite putting up big numbers as a receiver last season.

With these two commits, Virginia football now has 20 commitments in the class of 2015.
