Virginia Wins Capital One Cup For Men's Sports

From Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release A school-record three NCAA men's championships and a top-10 ranking in men's basketball led the University of Virginia to its first Capital One Cup all-sports competition championship for men's sports during the 2014-15 season.

The Capital One Cup competition is based on top-10 finishes in a combination of NCAA brackets and final polls and recognizes the top-achieving programs in college athletics. A separate champion is awarded for men's sports and women's sports.

The Virginia men finished with 149 points, earning 60 points for each of its final No. 1 rankings in men's soccer and baseball, 20 points for its final No. 1 ranking in men's tennis and nine points for its No. 8 final ranking in men's basketball.

"This is a proud moment for the University of Virginia, as our student-athletes, coaches, staff, donors and fans all played an important role to help bring home the Capital One Cup trophy," University of Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage said. "The award illustrates the success many of our programs achieved this year as we pursue our 10-year goals. It's fitting in the year we announced our All In For Excellence initiative that we won this competition with the help of so many supporters. On behalf of the University of Virginia, we would like to thank Capital One for its enduring commitment to college athletics."

Oregon placed second with 121 points followed Ohio State with 93.5 points. Florida placed fourth with 84 points and Denver placed fifth with 72 points.

In recognition of this achievement, Capital One will present a trophy and a check for $200,000 for student-athlete scholarships to the University of Virginia. That presentation will be made July 15 at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Providence College transfer Paschal Chukwu will play in the ACC, but it won't be for UVa. The 7'2" center reportedly has settled on Syracuse as his transfer destination, choosing the Orange over Iona, Michigan State, Nebraska, and UVa. Chukwu will sit out this coming season but will have three years of eligibility beginning in 2016/2017.

Barring a late class of 2015 addition, with Chukwu off the board Virginia's focus is now fully on finishing out the class of 2016 in strong fashion. UVa has three commitments - combo guards Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome, and forward/center Jay Huff - and has three scholarship spots remaining.

This week I plan to catch up with UVa commit Ty Jerome for his thoughts on the Nike Basketball Academy, which he competed this past week, as well as final thoughts on his experience in Charlottesville at the 2015 NBPA Top 100 Camp.

On the football recruiting front, Virginia picked up a 2016 commitment on Monday when 6'5", 270-pound rising senior offensive lineman Dillon Reinkensmeyer pledged to the Hoos. Reinkensmeyer is the 15th member of the 2016 recruiting class and the second offensive lineman. Stay tuned for more.

I'll also have report on new commits Jordan Mack, a safety out of Georgia, and Darrius Bratton, a defensive back/wide receiver out of William Fleming High School in Roanoke, Virginia, as well as the latest football recruiting updates.

EDGE subscribers also can check out my latest "Strategy Session," in which I analyze the latest football recruiting and roster additions and how they impact the needs of the 2016 Class moving forward.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
