Harold, Valles Selected In NFL Draft

Virginia defensive end Eli Harold extended the program’s 32-year streak in the NFL Draft on Friday night. The San Francisco 49ers selected Harold with the 79th overall pick in the third round.

Harold is one of 41 UVa players ever selected in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft. He joins UVa linebacker Ahmad Brooks with the 49ers. Brooks was a third round pick in 2006 of the Cincinnati Bengals. Cavalier defensive back Chris Cook is also with San Fran.

Exactly 100 picks after his pass-rushing counterpart received his call, Virginia’s Max Valles saw his name selected Saturday. Valles was the 179th pick in the sixth round when the Oakland Raiders made the move. Valles had minimal discussions with the Raiders during the lead-up to the draft.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Last week was action-packed with news on the basketball recruiting front.

For starters, there was the recruitment of L.C. Bird (Chesterfield, VA) senior shooting guard Kenny Williams. Williams narrowed his list to UNC and UVa and took an official visit to Charlottesville last Friday and Saturday. Heading into that visit, UVa was considered the favorite. From everything we were hearing, it appeared to be a matter of time before Williams became a Hoo. Well, on Saturday, hours after returning home from Charlottesville, the 4-star senior announced his commitment to the Tar Heels.

With Williams headed to UNC, UVa still has two open scholarship spots for next season. If there is a backup plan to Williams, my guess is we will hear something within the next week. We will keep you posted on any activity on the high school senior/transfer front.

In addition to Williams, Virginia hosted Blue Ridge (St. George, VA) junior power forward/center Mamadi Diakite on an official visit this past weekend. The 6’9” Diakite, who has also taken officials to Southern Cal and Washington, is one of UVa’s top post targets in the class of 2016. This week I plan to have the latest with this talented prospect’s recruitment, so stay tuned.

This coming weekend, Virginia is set to host Wisconsin junior small forward Sam Hauser on an official visit. The 6’6”, 190-pound Hauser was offered a scholarship by head coach Tony Bennett within the past few weeks. It’s certainly a good sign that he has scheduled an official to UVa so quickly, but stay tuned as I hope to have more from Hauser on his recruitment, including what other schools he is considering. Creighton, Iowa State and Marquette are among the other schools that have offered the sharp-shooting small forward.
