Tennis Teams Sweep ACC Titles From Virginia Athletics Media Relations News ReleasesThe No. 5 Virginia men's tennis team captured its ninth consecutive ACC Championship by defeating No. 11 Wake Forest 4-2 in Sunday's final. The Cavaliers (23-3) have won the title in 11 of the past 12 years, including defeating the Demon Deacons (22-7) in two of the past three championship matches. The Cavaliers' championship tied a pair of ACC Men's Tennis Championship records. Virginia's nine-year streak ties North Carolina (1970-78) for the longest span of consecutive titles in league history. Virginia's 11 ACC men's tennis titles during the team tournament era (since 1986) ties Duke for the most in conference history. The win extended Virginia's win streak against conference opponents (regular season and tournaments) to 139 consecutive matches, the longest streak in ACC history in any sport. It was also the Cavaliers' 27th consecutive win in the ACC Tournament. "Winning the ACC Championship never gets old," said head coach Brian Boland. "Other than the success my former players have had in life after leaving UVa, the thing I am most proud of is the consistency we have had year after year. It says a lot about the hard work that our players have put into the program and their ability to be ready to play every single day. It is a streak that I never imagined could be possible in a league as challenging as the ACC. "It was a tough tournament this year," added Boland. "This league keeps getting better and better. I have a ton of respect for Tony Bresky and what he has done at Wake Forest. He was my assistant for 10 years, so it is tough to see him lose. We won a lot of championships together." The UVa women's tennis team joined the repeat parade as well. No. 4 seed Virginia captured its second consecutive ACC Women's Tennis Championship with its 4-0 win over No. 6 seed Georgia Tech on Sunday. The two-time ACC champion Cavaliers improved to 21-5 with their sixth consecutive win. Virginia also became the first ACC school to capture back-to-back ACC championships since Georgia Tech won three consecutive titles from 2005-07. "Georgia Tech was unbelievable and give them a ton of credit," Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau said. "You're always fortunate to be here on that last day, and not to mention winning it. I'm so proud of the kids, everyone was fighting and no one was going to give a match away, and that has a tremendous impact. It feels good to win [a second straight ACC title] and Troy [Porco] and I are really happy for the kids." The Cavaliers defeated No. 1 North Carolina in the ACC Championship semifinals, marking their third win against a top-ranked opponent in school history. UVa has defeated the No. 1 team in the nation for three straight seasons. The Cavaliers also defeated then-No. 1 North Carolina in 2013 and then-No. 1 Duke in 2014. |

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne Grant, who gives Virginia seven commitments in the class of 2016, does a little bit of everything for the Cougars, earning first-team all-conference honors at kick returner and second-team all-conference honors at wide receiver, defensive back, and punt returner his junior season. He told TheSabre.com that UVa is recruiting him initially as a defensive back. Stay tuned for a full report on the newest Cavalier this week. In addition, I'll have a "Recruiting Q&A" with fellow Cavalier commit Landan Word, updates on UVa targets such as Christian Brooks, and more on the football recruiting front this week. Basketball recruiting-wise, I plan to have the latest on class of 2015 shooting guard target Kenny Williams, who made an unofficial visit to UVa last Tuesday. Williams has taken an official visit to UNC as well. Florida, Georgetown, Louisville, Michigan and VCU are under consideration as well. Jack Herron, a Vantage Hoops reporter, Tweeted that Williams will take official visits to Florida, Michigan, and Virginia soon. Virginia extended an offer to class of 2016 small forward Sam Hauser this past Saturday. I plan to catch up with Sam this week for thoughts on UVa. Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
