Brogdon, Anderson Named NABC All-Americans

From VirginiaSports.com Official News Release

Virginia's Malcolm Brogdon and Justin Anderson have earned All-America honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), the organization announced Monday. Brogdon was named to the NABC All-America Second Team, while Anderson earned a spot on the NABC All-America Third Team. Brogdon and Anderson become the first Virginia teammates to earn All-America honors in the same season since Ralph Sampson and Jeff Lamp were honored by several organizations in 1981. Brogdon and Anderson also become the first Cavaliers to earn NABC All-America honors since Sean Singletary in 2007.

Brogdon led the Cavaliers in scoring at 14 points per game and free throw percentage at 87.9 percent. He scored in double figures in 27 games, including five 20-point games, highlighted by a career-high 25 points against North Carolina in the ACC Tournament semifinals. Brogdon also has earned USBWA All-America second-team honors and All-ACC first-team honors from the media and coaches.

Anderson earns his first All-America honor despite missing eight games of the season due to a fractured finger suffered on Feb. 7 and an appendectomy on March 5. He was second on the team in scoring at 12.2 points per game and was leading the ACC in 3-point percentage at 48.4 percent before he was injured.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Before this past Saturday, the University of Virginia football program had not scored a class of 2016 verbal commitment in this calendar year. Bishop O’Connell (Arlington, VA) junior linebacker/athlete Landan Word changed that, pledging to the Hoos while on an unofficial visit.

Word, a 6’3”, 225-pound prospect, will follow in the footsteps of his father, Barry, who starred at UVa and also had a solid NFL career. He became the fourth class of 2016 prospect to commit to the Cavaliers, joining quarterback Sonny Abramson, wide receiver Cole Blackman, and wide receiver Joseph Reed.

On Monday, the Hoos received a pledge from Hallandale (FL) wide receiver Neru N'Shaka as well. N'Shaka is a 5'10", 175-pound prospect who also has offers from Pittsburgh and Marshall, among others.

Stay tuned for a full report on the new commitments this week.

Also on the football recruiting front, 5-star in-state cornerback Levonta Taylor will announce his college choice this Friday, April 3. Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, the Ocean Lakes (Va. Beach, VA) junior is likely to pick ACC-rival Florida State. We’ll find out for sure at 6 pm on Friday.

Basketball recruiting-wise, UVa hosted DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) class of 2016 shooting guard Markelle Fultz on an unofficial visit this past weekend. Fultz left Grounds with an offer. This week I hope to catch up with the 6’4” junior for thoughts on his trip as well as an update on his recruitment.

Virginia men’s basketball has three commitments already in the class of 2016. At this point the staff has two scholarships left to give in the class. One very likely will go to a big man, while the other will likely go to a wing. Fultz, who attended Virginia’s Elite Camp last August, now appears to be a definitive target.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
