This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

UVa MBB Recruits In Postseason Action

The postseason is here for all three of UVa’s class of 2016 recruits. I'll keep you posted on how they perform.

Combo guard Kyle Guy looks to lead Lawrence Central (Indianapolis, IN) to a win over Roncalli in the Sectional 10 playoffs. LCHS has nine wins to 12 losses on the season, but one of those wins was a 12-point decision over Roncalli.

Iona Prep (New Rochelle, N.Y.), which is led by junior point guard Ty Jerome, is the No. 1 seed in the CHSAA AA playoffs and will take on St. Peter’s Tuesday night at 7:30. Jerome is one of three Iona Prep standouts to make first-team all-league this season.

Virginia Episcopal School (Lynchburg, VA), which features 6’10” forward Sacha Killeya-Jones, will take on the winner of Walsingham Academy and Hargrave Military Academy on Wednesday, February 25, in the VISAA Division 2 State Quarterfinals. VES is the No. 2 seed in the tourney.

In case you missed it, Killeya-Jones released his junior season highlights over the weekend. Here is the link.

Next week, UVa class of 2015 recruit Jarred Reuter and Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.) look to capture the NEPSAC postseason tournament title. The NEPSAC AAA postseason tourney begins on March 4.

Football Recruiting

In addition to the basketball recruiting coverage, I’ll have the latest on the football recruiting beat, including a look at the top in-state targets in the class of 2016. For more on what positions Virginia football will be targeting in the class, check out my EDGE “Strategy Session” posted last week and linked below.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Please Welcome Sean Singletary To The Site

TheSabre.com is pleased to welcome Sean Singletary on board as a guest basketball analyst for the remainder of the season. Singletary will provide things like commentary, analysis, anecdotes from his playing days, and more. The Sabre is excited to have his insight on the Hoos and the ACC.

Singletary, who went on to play in the NBA, starred for four years at Virginia, earning All-ACC recognition of some kind in each season. He received a spot on the All-ACC Freshman Team in 2005 and was a three-time First-Team All-ACC member in 2006, 2007, and 2008. He also garnered All-American honors in 2007 (NABC third team) and 2008 (Associated Press honorable mention). He helped the Hoos share the ACC regular season title in 2007.

During his Cavalier career, Singletary became the first player in ACC history to finish with 2,000 points, 500 assists, 400 rebounds, and 200 steals. He recorded 2,079 points (fifth all-time), 587 assists (third all-time), and 200 steals (second all-time) to carve out spots all around the UVa record book. Singletary’s 222 made 3-pointers (fourth all-time) and 573 made free throws (fourth all-time) are also among the program’s all-time best.

Virginia retired Singletary’s No. 44 in 2009.

Singletary now runs “Sean Singletary Basketball” in Charlottesville and offers camps, clinics, and individual training sessions. Singletary is offering clinics this month (Jan. 24 and 25) in Charlottesville. Make sure to check out the full Sean Singletary Basketball website here for more information on those clinics and other scheduled appearances.

Stay tuned to TheSabre.com for Singletary’s contributions to the site as well: Sean Singletary archives.

  • Virginia Wins Eighth-Consecutive ACC Championship: The No. 8 Virginia women’s swimming and diving team won an unprecedented eighth-consecutive ACC Championship on Saturday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. It is the program’s 13th conference championship. The Cavaliers finished with 1,308.5 points, 53.5 ahead of North Carolina.
  • No. 6 UVa Sprints Past Rutgers in the Snow, 14-5: Zed Williams scored a career-high four goals and assisted another to help propel No. 6 Virginia (3-0) to a 14-5 road win over Rutgers (1-2) on Saturday afternoon.
  • Cavaliers Win 18-Inning Marathon Against Marist, 5-4; Lowry walk-off single ends longest game in program history: Freshman Christian Lowry hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 18th inning to lift the Virginia baseball team to a 5-4 win over Marist Sunday at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C. Ranked as high as No. 1 nationally, the Cavaliers (7-0) played the longest game by innings in program history, topping a 17-inning contest that ironically also occurred in Charleston on Feb. 26, 2006, against College of Charleston.
  • Second-Half Surge Powers Virginia Past Virginia Tech: The Virginia women's basketball team (16-11, 6-8 ACC) earned a 73-59 victory over Virginia Tech (10-17, 1-13 ACC) on Sunday at John Paul Jones Arena. The victory for the Cavaliers snapped a four-game losing streak. It was also the 18th consecutive win for Virginia over Virginia Tech. UVa owns a 45-10 record all-time over the Hokies and is 20-2 in ACC contests. The game was part of the 2014-15 Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529, which is a head-to-head, points-based competition between the athletic teams at Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers now lead the Hokies, 7.0-2.5.
