UVa Tops VT In Women's Hoops

From Virginia Athletics Media Relations

The Virginia women's basketball team (11-3, 1-0 ACC) opened ACC play with a 62-47 victory at Virginia Tech (9-6, 0-2 ACC) on Sunday in a Commonwealth Clash game in Blacksburg. With the half-point earned in this game, the Cavaliers now lead the Hokies in the Clash, 5.0-1.5.

"I am really pleased with the effort and intensity that we showed for 40 minutes," said Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle. "Virginia Tech did a good job of fighting back in the first half, but we did an amazing job of coming out in the second half and being focused and trying to put the game away. To ramp it up the way we did, we had everyone participate offensively and defensively. Getting to the free throw line in the second half allowed us to press and really forced our hand to have to become more aggressive, which was good for us."

Sophomore guard Breyana Mason was one of three Cavaliers to finish the game scoring in double digits, putting up 16 points. Freshman guard Mikayla Venson scored 13 points, while senior center Sarah Imovbioh had 11 rebounds and nine points.

The Cavaliers improved to 18-2 against the Hokies in ACC contests and 43-10 all-time against VT. Tech's last victory in the series was on Jan. 22, 2007, a string of 17 straight games.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

UVa’s men’s basketball program added its third commitment in the class of 2016 this past week, when 6’10” forward Sacha Killeya-Jones pledged to the Hoos. I caught up with the Virginia Episcopal School (Lynchburg, VA) junior and asked him why he decided on Virginia.

“I’ve been talking to my parents for days, weeks actually, trying to talk about my options. UVa was consistently brought up. It’s a perfect fit. I love Coach Bennett. They made me a priority. I really want to go somewhere I’m really wanted. It’s such a great fit. I figured I might as well pull the trigger,” said Killeya-Jones, who spurned offers from Georgetown, Notre Dame, VCU and Virginia Tech, among others, as well as serious interest from Duke and North Carolina.

Killeya-Jones joins combo guards Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome as Virginia’s commits in the class of 2016. As the scholarship situation stands right now, the Cavaliers have two more scholarships available to use in the class.

For more on Killeya-Jones and his commitment, check out the article I posted last week linked below. Also be sure to check out our “Men’s Basketball Scholarship Picture” page for a complete breakdown of the scholarship count as well as a listing of those high school players Virginia has offered.

While basketball enjoyed a successful start to the new year recruiting-wise, Virginia’s football program was dealt a blow yesterday, when West Orange (Winter Garden, FL) senior defensive end Brandon Wilson reneged on his commitment to the Cavaliers and pledged to Indiana.

UVa football now has 19 commitments in the class of 2015. This includes two players - offensive tackle Grant Polk and linebacker C.J. Stalker - who are expected to enroll on Grounds this month. This week, I’ll have the latest on Virginia’s scholarship situation and what targets on the wish list as we move closer to National Signing Day, which occurs the first Wednesday in February.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
