UVa Places 10 Cavaliers on the All-ACC Team

From Virginia Athletics Media Relations News Releases

Seven defensive players highlight Virginia’s 10 players named to the 2014 All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Football team, as announced Monday by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA). Safety Quin Blanding, cornerback Maurice Canady, linebacker Henry Coley, placekicker Ian Frye and defensive end Eli Harold led UVa with second-team honors. Safety Anthony Harris, running back Kevin Parks and linebacker Max Valles earned third team accolades, while defensive tackle David Dean and return specialist Darius Jennings were named honorable-mention honorees.

With eight players named to the second and third teams, UVa ranks No. 3 in the ACC for total number of 2014 All-ACC players named to either the first, second or third teams. Florida State (17) and Duke (9) are the only schools ahead of Virginia. The 10 overall All-ACC honorees for UVa are the most for the Cavaliers since 2002 when they also had 10 players who earned all-league recognition.

The All-ACC accolades are the second career nods for Harris and Parks, both of whom were all-league performers in 2013. Blanding, Canady, Coley, Dean, Frye, Harold and Valles all earned first career honors.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Last Friday night’s loss to Virginia Tech cost the Cavalier football program a postseason bowl game, so once again the Hoos are getting an early jump on recruiting in the offseason. Coach Mike London and company are looking to close out strong in class of 2015 recruiting but also delve more heavily into recruiting the class of 2016 and beyond.

A “Contact Period” began on Nov. 30 and lasts through Jan. 31. During this time, except for a “Dead Period” that takes place mid-December through mid-January, the Virginia football staff will be busy traveling to high schools and homes for evaluations and in-home visits. With at least one exception, Virginia’s class of 2015 seems solidly committed at this point. In recruiting it’s important to stay on your toes, though, and continue contact with commitments and targets through Signing Day.

This year’s National Signing Day is Feb. 4, 2015.

This week and in the days and weeks to come, I’ll continue to catch up current commits and targets for reaction to last week’s news that Mike London will be back in the 2015 season. So far the response has been favorable, which is expected considering Coach London is the coach these players committed to, but it is a plus to hear players like Nick Johns and Grant Polk say they are very solid now that London is definitely coming back.

EDGE subscribers can read more from Johns and Polk in last week’s “Sabre Scoop” feature. This week, I’ll continue to hit the football recruiting and basketball recruiting beats with the latest UVa-related news. I’ll also update you on how Virginia’s commitments performed this past week on the gridiron.

In the coming weeks, stay tuned for a football “Strategy Session” focused on the class of 2016. The Cavaliers already have three commitments in that class. I’ll look at those players and I’ll break down the projected scholarship situation, analyzing what the need spots may be. I’ll also provide a rundown of Virginia’s early top targets.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball.
